We’re moving from jazz back to hip hop. This time around it’s Dareian and Janelle doing a lyrical hip hop piece by Christopher Scott.

UGH, I hate the making out shit at the end of dances. That’s not the only thing I’m not crazy about. This dance was a total snooze for me which is a shame because I love the idea of a lyrical hip hop dance to “My Girl”. I also hate that dress on Janelle.
Adam thinks there are routines where you have to be more invested in the choreography and then others where you have to be more invested in the characters. This one is more of a character piece and he thinks Dareian was a little more successful with that than Janelle was. Basically, he wasn’t thrilled with it but doesn’t want to bash them.
Nigel calls it too elementary and gives Christopher Scott a bit of a scolding before moving on to the dancers. Nigel thinks both of them are capable of doing more. He thinks they also needed to bring more to it as well.
I think Mary is having an allergic reaction to her dress? It seems like she’s bloating up before my very eyes!
I can’t even concentrate on what she’s saying. She’s doing a Violet Beauregard!
And then…..UGH. Of course the judges have to make it all about themselves once again, and Mary makes some comment about the kissing and before you know it….
Really?
Nigel is probably twitching and hoping they take a break soon so he can wash his mouth out with bleach.
Broadway time with Janaya and Brandon. But joy of joys, it’s not Sir BitchyPants!! But wait. Cheesman is choreographing Broadway????? I’m scared.

Wow. I’m impressed. My terror was unfounded because this was actually quite good. I never would have thunk it. I was a little distracted my Mary’s mike being left open; her muffled chatter throughout was annoying as hell. But all in all, I think they did a really good job here.
Cheesman seems a LOT happier than last week!
Adam gets to go first again, which is a surprise to him, but he recuperates quickly and tells them that they were very successful and it was a huge step up for Brandon. “Movie plug.” Bleh. Nigel thinks this was brilliant Broadway. At home Sir BitchyPants is crying and biting his pillow. Mary thinks it was one of the most entertaining routine of the evening. She also talks about Brandon stepping it up and Adam gets bitchy about her adding an “it” into his movie title.
It’s different when I do it!
If you like it, spread it!:

I’m not disappointed to see Daniel go because his whole “I’m Australian” nine-second bio bugged me. He seemed as disengaged from the performance as Alexa was so in a way they were a great pairing because neither brought much but technique to their dances. Even in the Green Mile, Nigel pointed out that Daniel’s greatest strength was consistency while Chehon may have been less consistent, he is also able to transcend technique and be dazzling.
The one I feel bad for is Eliana. I like Cyrus and he seems like a really hard-working and diligent student, but being partnered with him is forcing her to dance far more rudimentary choreography so he doesn’t look completely outclassed by her. I understand why the choreographers are doing that but I’d have loved for her to be partnered with anyone else, even Brandon who is clearly trained in more than stepping, to see what she can do.
And I hope Chehon and Witney choose a style this week that’s a little closer to his forte. I mentioned in the forums that I think choosing samba, especially if there was contemporary or jazz or even Broadway available, was a bad choice. It’s clearly in Witney’s wheelhouse, but is so anathema to Chehon’s training that they’d have been better to ease him into the fastest most rumpshaking Latin style. They’d have killed on the paso the way Cole and Lindsay did but the samba this early for him was a bad, bad idea.
I think Chehon being in the bottom was understandable he wasn’t good last week. He was so out of his element
I was never a fan of Daniel’s so I really don’t care about him going home. He’s a great dancer but there’s something that irks me about him. And Nick I just find smarmy for some reason.
I was surprised about Alexa leaving too, but glad that she’s gone. I don’t think she should have been there in the first place.
And as much as I love Cyrus I’m really getting the feeling that he’s going the way of Jose and Cedric. I accidentally typed Cedric instead of Cyrus when writing that sentence, so that can’t be a good sign.
My roommate and I are going to see Step Up next week. I wasn’t planning on going to see it until I find out Twitch and other SYTYCD dancers was going to be in it again. Hopefully they won’t spend too much time on what ever the crappy plot is .
I am a huge fan of Cyrus!! I think the kid is very brave to get up on that stage and perform. I will also give him full credit for this performance – I would have been scared shitless that I’d drop Eliana (she’s not tiny!) but… That was tough to watch. I honestly felt for him although, another point in his favor – he looked like he was having a blast!!! If next week is his last, he still has a whole lot to be proud of!! And I will also say this – Eliana is a class act!!! No matter how hard it has to be, how much he may bring her dancing down…. She was just lovely and supportive which only makes me love her more!!!! Isn’t this what some of the All-Stars had to contend with? She has been amazing in both ability and personality!!
And you know what? I really think that whole “spoke to the choreographers” comment was directed at Daniel. Something tells me he is not the easiest to work with. Maybe Alexis was the problem in that partnership but seems to me he shoulders half the blame there. When they did the intro to the tub performance I was hoping for something like the Twitch/Kherrington mattress piece by Mia (which was A-Maz-Zing! And if you didn’t see it… Oh man – YouTube! Just MHO) .. No, not even close!! It felt… Creepy/pervy to me.
Some of the girls let me down but I like Amelia more the less she talks! She and Will are quite lovely together. How the Hell does a guy that big (and he has some big feet) more so beautifully? My 20-year old son is 6’4″ and graceful is not a word I’d use to describe him. (He plays rugby so it works for him) I am so impressed by Will!! He just seems so… Cute. Sweet. Funny. Silly. I really like him!!
Have fun in NYC!!!! You will be missed! Thanks for yet another awesome recap! I thought of you when Alexis got cut!! ; )
Great recap — as always, PottyMouth. (I am occasional poster, but under different names; I can’t remember which I use here!). Two comments:
1. That “lyrical hip hop” to My Girl by Dareian and Janelle? I didn’t see the intro package (I have Tivo, just FF’ed through it). I couldn’t figure out WHAT style it was watching it — I even thought maybe some ballroom style for a while in the beginning. Very confusing. I thought he was much better than she was — but not necessarily as a hip hop dancer. What happened to hip hop on this show?!?!?
2. While I am sure that some people appreciated the shot of Jennifer Aniston… but where was Hugh? (don’t think I didn’t notice!)
Have a good time in NYC!
I’ve watched every season of this show…who the hell is Tony Bellissimo?!
Does anyone remember Will and his partner Jessica and how the judges used to verbally abuse her week after week for holding Will back and for supposedly being so far beneath him as a partner? Why does Cyrus get a pass? Sure, this season contestants are getting votes separately, but because Cyrus can’t do choreography Eliana is stuck doing basic steps so Cyrus can keep up. I think it was such a mistake putting him on the show this year. It would have been better to tell him they wanted him on the show but that he needed to go train for another year and to come back. Eliana is obviously an amazing dancer, and she hasn’t really gotten a chance yet to show that during the competition.
I’m surprised Amber wasn’t in the bottom 3 girls being Nick’s partner. I think Janelle might be in trouble this week.
I’m satisfied with the results. I would have rather Amber left instead of Janaya, actually, but oh well, I’m glad with how it turned out.
My favourites right now are definitely Matthew and Audrey, Cole, Witney and Chehon and Tiffany and George. And I do like Darian and Janelle and Amelia and Will quite a bit too.
Also, good on Tiffany and George for that awesome foxtrot! I recall in seasons past how the foxtrot came to be known as “the kiss of death” considering how often it sent couples home, but man they nailed it! Good on them! They aren’t getting as much attention as some other couples, I don’t think, but I think that they’re dark horses for sure – particularly George.
I haven’t seen any of the Step Up movies, but I’m tempted to now. I don’t know if I can stomach the acting though. She’s a gorgeous dancer, but judging from the previews, Katherine McCormick is a TERRIBLE actor. Yikes. I guess I’ll see…
Yay the recap is up!
Enrique’smole I think the difference between Will/Jessica and Cyrus/Eliana is that Will was stuck with Jessica. If Cyrus sucks then people can vote him off. He can’t make Eliana be in the bottom, but Jessica could make Will be in the bottom. Now I think they were super shitty to Jessica, in fact I’m glad that they made that change for that reason. If one partner is truly bad while the other is great then the bad one will get booted. If both are being cut then they can’t really claim that one partner is holding them back. Also Cyrus is popular, Jessica was not. They knew the results, so I’m sure they knew how Cyrus did in voting and that played a role. Why talk about how he’s holding her back if they see him getting great numbers you know? Meanwhile Will was getting into the bottom over and over “because of Jessica”. So it’s really a different situation because of the rule change at least imo.
From the outset of this season the recapper at TWOP has wondered how texting names to vote was going to impact things pointing out the odd names/spelling. Case in point Witney (no h) and Chehon. I am really disappointed Daniel is gone. He was fab, but I’m glad Chehon stayed. And I was thrilled Alexa is gone. They were not a good pair at all and she seriously never ever has an expression.
I did like the Will/Amelia piece but I did think it was weird Amelia was smiling the whole time (look I’m giving you ethereal joy!) when it was supposed to be a piece that was serious and dark. I thought they might mention it but no. I do like her better when she’s talking less.
Otherwise my favorites are like many others. Liked the jazz pieces, liked the foxtrot. I’m another who did not realize the “lyrical hip hop” piece was that style until I read it later. Definitely didn’t come across that way, more Broadway to me. Well not exactly Broadway but musical theater. And I did agree the male (Dariean) came off better than Janelle.
Ok Enrique’s Mole, I honestly see what you’re saying but I think there is a big difference. I had to pull up YouTube video’s and info on that season to remember Jessica. She went into the competition as a trained contemporary dancer so it was fully expected that she “get” choreography and have basic dance training. There was NO such expectation for Cyrus – they KNEW he was totally untrained and made the choice. Right or wrong, they knew what they were getting into. Yes, they had hopes but… No promises. Should they give him the pass? We all know by now, they do what they want for often unknown reasons!! I will say that he has more passion and joy for the dance than Jessica did in all the clips that I watched. She never made an impression on me but he has!
And I still argue that Eliana is showing AMAZING skill each time she dances with Cyrus. I believe that it takes tremendous talent to dance with a partner with such limited training. It could have been a total joke with her dancing and him shuffling in place but there were impressive lifts and real joy in the dance. I doubt Cyrus will last – she will have her time to really shine!!! I have no doubts about her.
I officially fell in love with Will this week. He seems so genuinely delighted to be on that stage…and I LOVE the fact that someone with his not-so-typical body type dances like that.
I was surprised that Amber wasn’t in the bottom three, I would have been fine to see her go home. Maybe I’ll change my mind when she’s with a different partner…each time they danced together I got so distracted thinking, “Wow, she really HATES him!”. On the same note, I thought Nigel was directing his comments about talking to the choreographers to Nick as well–boy seemed kind of difficult.
And yes, I will be seeing the Step Up movie! A while ago, my husband and I were at the movies and a preview came on–he turned to me and said (with resignation in his voice), “We are going to that, aren’t we?”. I replied, “The acting will be awful, the plot and dialogue will be painful, but the dancing will be AMAZING…so of course.”
Thanks for another great recap!
I am also glad to see somebody with an unconventional body type dancing – and I’m glad that Nigel hasn’t been going on and on about it! (Apart from a couple of comments in the top 20 show, of course.)
Remember Donyelle? She was partnered with Benji, I think, for Season 2. A seriously awesome (and super sexy) dancer, but all Nigel could do was go on and on about how awesome it was to have a “big girl” dancing. And she wasn’t even really big!!! It was so annoying, I wish he would have just shut up and let her dance without having to comment on her size.
AND in Season 4 (Mark’s season, ah, my love!!) there were a couple of dancers – Kourtni Lind (who looked like Uma Thurman) and Matt – who were SUPER tall (she was 5’9 and he was 6’3 I think) compared to everyone else and again, Nigel wouldn’t shut the hell up about it. Whenever he talked about Kourtni he made it seem like she was 6’8 and 400 lbs, ugh. So irritating.
Hopefully he doesn’t start doing the same to Will.
And in regards to Jessica and other Will (from season 4), theirs is not at all the same situation as Eliana and Cyrus. She did not bring Will down, not even close. She was an excellent, trained dancer who the judges just happened to hate and if they got shitty choreography or made any mistakes (I remember that Will once DROPPED her and broke her ribs – eventually she had to leave to competition due to it) then they would always harp on her, but truly it was not her fault, Will just happened to be their pet that season and poor Jessica took the brunt of any critiques.
If anybody can be compared to Cyrus and Eliana, it’s Cedric and Shauna (from Season 3, I think). Shauna was a beautiful, brilliant, trained dancer who got stuck with Cedric for at least a few routines and got kicked off before she should have because of it. Cedric just couldn’t do anything other than his genre and their routines were usually terrible.
I have nothing to add about the dances because my DVR didn’t tape the show!!! ARGH! I need my SYTYCD fix! If this happens again, someone at Comcast is going down! Also, why can’t I watch it online unless I have a certain provider? Bad idea Fox! Are they trying to alienate viewers?????
I always felt Will and Jessica were in the bottom because Will lacked personality and because the audience knew he was Debbie Allen’s pet…not unlike Alexa this season. From my perspective, Jessica became the scapegoat in the pairing.
Alexa getting the early boot just shows Travis Wall doesn’t have Mia’s power yet.
I do agree with you cattyfan that Jessica was the scapegoat and the Will while an excellent dancer was sort of blank personality-wise. But even so I don’t think we’ll be seeing the scapegoat/”you’re so bad and you’re bringing your partner down” storylines this season since you can vote for them separately so everyone really sinks or swims on their own. I guess we’ll see how it plays out.
Jerseyj, this happened to me last week – stoopid summer storms! – but I found clips on YouTube. You gotta search but I found all of them last week. Maybe you can find them and check them out, if you have more self-control than I do ; ) I always end up sucked into YouTube for hours and re-watch old routines.
Potty—THANK YOU !!!!!! Amelia is not a fave of mine–she did justice to Sonya’s routine–I am a fan of hers from day one–Sadly its the quirk that got Amelia cast and will keep on the show too long
@nooneinparticular – I disagree that each person sinks or swims on their own because each couple has to perform together. So because Cyrus has so little training the choreographers have to simplify the dances which means Eliana is working far below her training and skills. As such she doesn’t come off to the audience who votes as strongly as she can. She doesn’t have the opportunity to pick up fans based upon her dancing because she’s forced to have to do very basic routines.
And since Cyrus is so understandably popular he’s not getting booted from the competition any time soon, so she’s be stuck doing very simple choreography. She’s not likely to have that wow dance because she’s dancing with Cyrus. So while she’s getting her own votes, she’s only able to perform at 75% of her capabilities. And I don’t think that’s fair to her.
I almost always have a hard time watching A. Tango on shows like this. Even my mom, though, found Amber/Nick’s cringeworthy. Their posture was all wrong–even in close embrace they stood perfectly straight (in AT you dance with your hips out and shoulders in), Amber’s connection was weak (with her hand barely touching his shoulder like that I couldn’t imagine her receiving the message if they were really dancing) and her torso lacked strength. She was so focused on her legs that she ignored her center, which detracts from the whole thing visually and would make it impossible in a real dance. Both had problems with connecting their movements. They often went straight from one move to the next when they should have paused at “home,” or at the very least, transferred the weight slowly to give a more authentic look. Always taking huge all or nothing steps is a beginner’s mistake because many steps involve the leader “taking back” a step or stopping the movement before the follower finishes stepping, but if you’ve already taken the step you’ve thrown everything off.
I’m finished with my cynical tangera’s assessment, xP
PM- once again, you are spot on with all of your observations. I agree that Leonardo and Mariam are gorgeous together, but don’t choreograph others well. I usually find their routines pretty boring. Too bad Alex da Silva had to go and rape somebody, because I remember both Chelsea & Mark and Danny & Sara being absolutely breathtaking on their seasons when dancing in this style.
I hate Christopher Scott’s duos, but LOVE every group number. I think the guy just sucks at choreographing pairs because he’s used to working on a grander scale with LXD. Or something.
I’m glad Chehon is still around. He’s so effing pretty. *sigh*
To all the Cyrus haters- just be patient. He’ll only be around for a couple weeks more then he’ll be featured as a solo dancer on tour. I hope the kid gets rich (and then loans me $30) cuz he seems like a nice guy.
