SYTYCD Recap: Two For the Price of One

Cat also gets to pick a dance this evening and she chooses one to match her dress:  Disco with Tiffany and Brandon.

It’s so shiny!  What’s not to love?

Chehon is up with his pick next and he chooses the Argentine Tango with Anya.  Nice.  I really like that he chose to do a ballroom dance when he had such difficulty with the genre throughout the season.  He talks a bit about his challenge of deliver emotion to his performance and he also felt like this dance was a really turning point for him.  I think the fact that his mom was in the audience is what really did it for him that week and I STILL remember his solo and him crying afterward.

He has really grown on me.

This time around we go to Mary for her thoughts.  She says he has been extraordinary from the start.  She also brings up his solo and that emotional breakthrough.  She thinks he is an amazing dancer and it was so special watching him grow.  I’m really hoping that’s not a consolation speech she’s giving him right now.

The next group performance revolves around Cyrus.  Literally.  I’d be super pissed off if this dance weren’t so freaking AWESOME!!  It’s choreographed by Christopher Scott who is also DANCING in the number along with Twitch, Comfort, and (OF COURSE) Cyrus.

At one point they all freeze and the camera does a 360 around them.  Y’all know how much I hate the camera work on this show normally, but that was DA BOMB!!  I have already gone back and watched this a bunch of times because a) I flove Chris Scott and seeing him dance here made my night and b) there were so many little bits throughout the number that I HAD to go back and watch again.  Suspender tutting?  GENIUS!!

I was really hoping that Tiffany would pick her jive with Benji as her reprise dance, but she goes in a different direction, picking her dance with Ade, choreographed by Mandy Moore.  She really feels like this dance was her defining moment.

Someone should tell Ade it’s not nice to kick your partner in the head!

Ouch.  That really looks like it hurts.

Cat goes to Mary again who says Tiffany has done everything she could possibly do this season and then some.  She tells her this truly was a defining moment for her; she has done nothing wrong this season and Mary just loves her.  Tiffany is adorable as this is going on, trying to keep a hold on her emotions and BARELY doing it.

Time for audition moment #2.  It’s the “exorcist” style, which reduced Mary to a blubbering mess.  I myself may or may not have gotten a little misty eyed.

PottyMouth

When she isn't screaming curses at various dance show judges or washing her OWN mouth out with soap, PottyMouth is a proud mama to a gorgeous little boy. And yes, she knows everyone says that about their kids, but it's true when she says it. YES IT IS. Fuck you. She also laments throwing away the chance to be a trophy wife, and would like to find a rich husband so she can sit on her ass all day long and watch TV. If you are fabulously wealthy, look like Hugh Jackman (or ARE in fact Hugh Jackman), and are turned on by foul-mouthed, mature, slightly smooshy women, then she just may be the gal for you. Does Tiff’s sister remind you of Anna Kendrick by any chance?
As much as I adore Chehon and am amazed and glad that he won for the boys, this entire season appalled me. Live shows went by far to fast and was quite often crap. Not to mention keeping Cyrus around so long was bullshit.
I’m afraid that the show will be axed soon, which saddens me. As a dancer, it’s been nice to have dance exemplified so beautifully by media. This season didn’t do that for me.

I skipped the finale, and reading your commentary on Nigel’s commentary makes me glad I did. But kudos to you for taking one for the team, sticking it out and continuing to produce stellar recaps on a seriously crappy season. It made the season so much more bearable.

As I was reading, I remembered that Nigel’s ex-wife and show-biz partner was one of the judges on the Australian version of SYTYCD. I found myself wishing that she had gotten SYTYCD USA in the divorce. I totally understand why she had to leave that man (not sure why she married douchy Skelator in the first place)

Oh my GOD the Circle of Life dance was so amazing, I’ve already watched it multiple times and I just can’t get enough. Was it Marko who did the big jump over thing? I thought it was George. Whatever- it’s hard to tell who everyone is with all the makeup and crazy hair and nutso camera work.

Yay! I picked Chehon for the win from his audition! However, I didn’t think Nigel would allow him to win as he clearly backed Cyrus the whole season. No, even Chehon’s win couldn’t redeem the shitshow that was this season. I’m sad b/c I used to love it.

I just this moment finished watching the finale (effed up work schedule kept me away) and I’m soooo STOKED right now! I truly did not think that the outcome I wished for would actually happen — not in a million years. So now I’ll be doing my happy dance while reading your cap. YAY!

    I loved DragonHouse too!

Potty, as I’m reading this (halfway through now) I just have to tell you how much I love reading you, but get outta my head! I seriously agree with you about everything. Everything. Yes, Ramalama is the all-time best group number. And OMG when Mary pronounced it “hollycaust” I nearly lost it. What a maroon. And my hatred of sir bitchy pants is on par with yours, so I thoroughly enjoy your lambasting of him. In short, you slay me!

I didn’t hear anything Mary said all night, I was so distracted by that ugly Christmas decoration.

I liked Tyce’s routine before they said it was about the Holocaust. I find it interesting that most of the memorable routines picked were ones with the All-Stars.

I wasn’t surprised by Eliana’s favorite pick or Cyrus’s. It was one of the few times he actually got to dance. If he had picked any other routine it would have been him walking around and lifting. I feel bad for him, he doesn’t really have any amazing moments and routines like the others.

I’m happy about the outcome of the season, but it didn’t redeem it at all. I wasn’t even excited for the finale like I’m usually am, I’m just happy and relieved this season is over. This season has been a chore to get through for me.

I’m sorry if I keep talking about Cyrus a lot. It’s just every time I see him I feel like I’m looking at a kicked puppy.

    RAMALAMA!!!!! Best. Group. Performance. Ever!!!!!

I loved seeing Christopher Scott dance and loved that performance as a whole. I also loved Tabitha and Napoleon’s group number and having both the all stars and the top 10 perform. And I was thrilled with the outcome. Eliana was one of my favorites from the start and Chehon really did develop as the season progressed.

I totally thought Cyrus was going to win since it seemed like the whole finale was geared toward him: all of Nigel’s comments about him, the Christopher Scott hip-hop routine featuring him, the Dragon House animator routine (even though he wasn’t in it, it is his style), and all of the shenanigans from the previous episodes. I had vowed that I would never watch this show again and I was getting ready to throw the remote at the TV after Cyrus was announced the winner. I was very happily surprised to watch Chehon won. It almost redeemed the season for me.

OK-Hold the bricks-but I still like Nigel better than Mary and I’m not sure who pushed Cyrus on the show,but-I don’t think it was Nigel. “It’s just every time I see him I feel like kicking the puppy.” Or maybe, just give him to Romney for a nice vacation roadtrip.

There are much lower life forms out there than Nigel in the dance world .Or did you forget some of the choreographers are behind bars now?

I will miss you and these recaps very much PM. Probably more than the actual show.

I also LOVE Will. He was my second favorite male dancer, and I thought he was seriously underrated and not really challenged. He could have done so much more.

Like you, I would have been happy with either girl winning, but I’m probably happier with an Elaina win. There is an immaturity with Tiffany, and Eliana really is a great dancer.

It seemed like a Cyrus win has been planned from the beginning. I was so against this that I actually voted a lot for Chehon last week. Before they announced it, I was preparing myself for major disappointment (I was not about to let a Clay/Ruben fiasco happen to me again). I spent a good minute with my mouth agape after Chehon’s name was announced. That turned into a huge smile, which then turned into dancing around my living room shouting “Suck it Nigel”. I was in such a good mood, I couldn’t even watch Sons of Anarchy (I knew my mood would go to a darker place with that show).
So, for me, this season was redeemed by Chehon winning. My favorites from early on in any competition show rarely win (even though they should, like Clay on AI, and more recently Jamar from The Voice). It was nice to be invested and for once have it pay off.
However, this is my first season watching. If I had watched 8 better seasons before this I might not feel the the same way. I’m a little bummed I haven’t watched before. I believe the best group dance you speak of WS choreographed by Wade Robson, who I have loved since his Britney days. I even watched his dance show on MTV way back when.
Thank you for the laughs and your insight into dance.

I started feeling like Chehon won when most of the second hour was dedicated to the power and glory that is Cyrus. I couldn’t imagine they’d go to all that effort AND give him the win, too. So it was his consolation. I mean, Nigel’s a dick but when Dragon House came out I thought “They can’t also give Cyrus the win, can they?”

But then Nigel started talking out of his ass again about how Cyrus stole the season and I thought ‘Why yes, they can make the entire finale about him,” and then…Chehon won. The season was a bust but the right two won, even if they were held back for the better part of the season, so at least it ended on a really high note.

And I cringe every time Nigel says chaise lonzh because it’s actually spelled “chaise LONGUE” and is pronounced “long” as in “long chair” which is what it means. Chaise LOUNGE just means “chair sit.”

So, I watched Monday’s Ellen where the Top 4 performed. The audience went NUTS over Cyrus, and after that, I was convinced he was going to win. My hubby really liked Cyrus and wanted him to win (because Cyrus was his favorite dancer, because all he really likes is animation and Sonya’s jazz pieces). I had told my hubby all day he was going to win. And I’ll admit it, I was a little torn. Chehon is BY FAR the better dancer, but there’s something about Cyrus’ personality that I really liked and admired. He just seemed kinda humble and shy in person, but through his dancing (his style) you could see the intensity and passion and get a glimpse deeper into his personality. So I kinda wanted them both to win for entirely different reasons. Then Cyrus got a number built completely around him, which no one else did. (However, I freaking ADORE Christopher Scott, and my hubby and I both agreed we were watching him for most of the routine.) And then they had a Dragon House performance. And then I was completely positive he was going to win because I figured they’d want his friends there for the win, you know, storm the stage, all that sappy stuff. I was actually a little sad at that point. Then when they announced Chehon, I gasped, turned to my hubby and said “Sorry, but he deserved the win.” So I guess I know now where my heart lies. It could’ve gone either way for me for the girls, but I’m just glad Eliana didn’t have a lipstick fiasco this time, because it would have been splashed all over the news right after.
As far as the group routines, I don’t think the Sonya/Christopher one was my favorite of the night and don’t understand why it was so talked up. I REALLY liked the Napolean/Tabitha one!!
And now my five year old is telling me to get off the computer so he can play Disney Junior. Which is just as well since I seem to talk a lot with my hands, as I do with my mouth. :)
If there’s a next season, I’m with you for it! We didn’t start watching until Season 4, and then we had our cable turned off until this season (I like to call those The Dark Days), so I refuse to miss another as long as the show is renewed!

Also, when Nigel said something about Cyrus having a brand or something, I said “I think he’s talking to you, Shankman.” And hubby replied “DubStep Up.” It will happen. Maybe not with Cyrus, but I can totally see this happening.

I agree that the openning piece, although great, was not in the same level as Ramalama, the greatest openning ever. Actually, in my opinnion, it wasn’t even in my top 05, since I think “What’s a Girl Gotta Do” from season 6 or “Highter Ground” from season 5 are much better (and that’s just some of the amazing opennings that popped in my head at the moment).

Great ending for a such underwhelming season. That being said, I hope it wins best reality show on the Emmys. Nigel’s ego will fly through the roof, but Fox will renew the show for another season, so it’s a small price to pay.

PS – Smash’s coreography beating SYTYCD or even DWTS was bulls***t.
PS 2 – In the picture that you posted, Tiff’s sister reminds me of Hilary Swank.

I thought the finale really demonstrated Cyrus’s limitations.

None of the favorite routines featured Cyrus, because just he wasn’t very good in any of his routines–except for the animator routine with Twitch. But of course, you knew he was going to have to pick that one as his favorite, because he COULDN’T DO ANYTHING ELSE.

I didn’t notice Cyrus at all in the jungle routine either. Was he just in the back beating a drum until the final pose?

It almost seemed to me that they had to include that Christopher Scott hip-hop routine just so Cyrus could be featured in some way, to justify his being in the final four. I will say, though, that that routine was amazing. The best I’ve seen Cyrus dance all season.

I thought Cyrus looked genuinely shocked that he didn’t win the whole shebang (as did Chehon). I’m thrilled that Chehon won. He’s an amazing dancer and he seems like a genuinely nice guy.

O.K. I’m going to show my age here, but I think Tiffany’s sister is a dead ringer for Ali McGraw from Love Story. Not so much in that picture, but definitely when they show her on the show. I’ve thought that since the first time I saw her. Crazyyy resemblance.

Pottyy@ I doubt you are old enough to remember this actress, but Tiffany’s sister reminded me of Taryn Power, daughter of Tyrone Power, who appeared in some movies and tv shows in the 1970′s. It’s the eyebrows and the shape of the face. I tried to post a link to a photo, but it was about three miles long, so just search one of the search engines’s image databank and see if you don’t agree.

Oh, just wanted to add: I assumed from the beginning that the suitcase dance was Holocaust-related, because the song they used is based on a famous poem, “Eli, Eli,” by Hannah Szenes:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannah_Szenes

I was actually really surprised they didn’t say something about it the first time the dance was on.

I have rarely disliked a dancer -although there was a guy in season 3 I think who thought very highly of himself and was rude to others-but Cyrus, made me grit my teeth. Every time, every solo, the same damn thing. Is there one other dancer in history who’s gotten away with that and not been reprimanded for it? What-were there bomb threats from the mindless youth of America who can’t tell the difference between a trained dancer and a kid who practices in his livingroom with his pals? While admirable-yes,he blew the greatest opportunity of a lifetime to grow and expand as a dancer and become like Twitch, a multi-dimensional dancer who can ballroom dance as well as hip-hop. I really hope he’s not dragged out every year as a shining example-of-
what? The emperor has no clothes syndrome Once Again??
I loved Chehon from that very first magnificent leap. He deserved to win. Anyone else think he looks like Harry Connick Jr.? Just me then. I wish they’d shown his mother after they announced the win but maybe she couldn’t stand the suspense. Wasn’t she the sweetest little mama? And I was thrilled he reprised the Argentinian Tango. My copy Of Jeese Cook’s CD arrived over a week ago. The full version is over 6 minutes long-swoon.

Absolutely agree about Ramalama. It will always be the best group number, evah. That Lion King Nappytabs bit was pretty durn good though. I rewound several times.

@PM, thanks for the shout out. That interview I saw was really interesting…it’s Benji on Mormon Stories; part 2 was about his SYTYCD experience.

I’m with you about Mary shoulder ornament. I actually said to my husband, “What’s with the giant Christmas wreath on her shoulder?!”

I was really expecting Cyrus to win and was SO happy that he didn’t! That would have been the worst title rob ever on this show. (Yes, Danny should have won S3.) Tiffany did a fantastic job, but Eliana was amazing. I too was hoping Tiff would pick her jive with Benji as her favorite. I was really shocked that Cat didn’t notice the lipstick on Eliana’s teeth last week…it would have been so like her to whip out a tissue, and wipe it off for her. I *heart* Cat Deeley, even when she make bad fashion choices.

See, I would have been PISSED if Tiffany won. I can not tell you a single dance she was in. I never remembered her when they were introducing the girls. Even in the final four she still did nothing that was memorable. The only thing worse would have been if Witney had been in the top four.
