Wow. Am I dreaming or did we actually have some exciting performances this time around? I have to admit, I’m in a little bit of shock over it since the majority of this season has been about 152 shades of grey for me. Not that I’m complaining; better late than never I guess!
Once again, Cat supports blind crafters by wearing their latest project as a dress
She’s so great that way, isn’t she? She reminds us that after tonight we’ll be down to four dancers and then we’re ready to jump into tonight’s group dance.

I really liked this number a lot. It was really great to see Eliana and Chehon paired up together, and I thought as a whole they all did really well. Honestly, I didn’t even pay attention to whether or not Cyrus was even dancing because I was so happy watching everyone else. Kudos to Sonya on this one.
Something sort of adorable happens while Cat introduces the dancers this week. As each of the guys come out, they each do a “C” sign with their hands and then mimic each others’ styles, sort of like a little homage to each other. Chehon does the martial arts fusion thing, Cyrus attempts to look like a ballet dancer, and Cole does a little bit of popping.
It’s sort of adorable
I always love just how much the dancers all seem to really like each other on this show. Every season that always seems to shine through. Anyway, I had to mention it because it totally made me smile.
Cat starts out by reminding us that next week’s final four show will be on Tuesday night rather than Wednesday and I am now convinced that Fox is done with this show. Why the hell would you move it to a different night for the last two performances?
Yes, yes, I know. But still.
So stupid. Also, in case you haven’t already realized, tonight’s dances actually don’t count for anything other than showing off what the dancers can do. Again, not complaining, just a bit baffled by the wonky format this year.
Tonight the dancers will be dancing three times each: a solo, a dance with an all-star, and a dance with a fellow contestant. Also, tonight the judges have no power to “save” someone (or send them home as I like to call it). That’s right; it all comes down to America’s vote tonight.
Oh great.
As always we’ve got Nigel and Mary at the judges’ table, and joining them for a second time this season is Christina Applegate. Eh. It’s not that I don’t like Christina, I actually do and I think she’s gives some really great critiques. I was just hoping that maybe we’d get DEBBIE ALLENat least once this year.
Where you at Debbie?
If you like it, spread it!:

What there something in the water? Did they give the choreographers and dancers are a shot of adrenaline this week? Why are we just now getting wow performances? This episode just made me even more frustrated with this season.
And poor Marko has been left at the altar twice now.
Do they not do dress rehearsals? It seems like every season a few wardrobe malfunctions happen. At least it wasn’t to a girl this time though, so we didn’t have hear a Nigel comment.
I agree that Cyrus will win for the guys. I do like Cyrus and is the judges had given him any criticism this season, I would accept his being in the final. But, you didn’t quit and not noting that the dances were choreographed around Cyrus’s weaknesses didn’t help him and hurt other, better dancers. Chehon got ripped in ballroom and that is way outside his genre. Nobody said that Chehon hanging in there was impressive.
Tiffany may well pull it out for the girls. I like Eliana, but she was held back by being paired with Cyrus. She had to deal with choreography that was structured around him, so she never really got to grow or show her stuff, because Cyrus didn’t have the training to allow that.
This could be the last season of SYTYCD. If so, I will be saddened that the series will end with a dancer who didn’t have the training to make this a remarkable season in the final four.
I’m semi-happy about the results. I am glad that Witney is gone, but I really, really wanted Cole and Chehon to be the final two guys, simply because I think Chehon has a much better chance of winning if he’s up against Cole than Cyrus. I am also worried that Cyrus is going to win. I just…no. That would be so wrong. I want Chehon to get it!!!
The performances were great this week, so bummed that they come so late in the season. Maybe next year will be better…
I think Chehon might be gaining on Cyrus. Between his parents and how emotional he got last week, plus that great tango and contemporary this week, and finally maybe some backlash against Cyrus the Precious Snowflake and Chehon’s the most likely to beat him. The best technical dancer who has the big “emotional” breakthrough against the favorite who can’t dance a lick other than in his very, very precise style. Cole started strong but he was fading since the top 10. If he were up against Cyrus I don’t think he’d stand a chance because he didn’t have any kind of arc.
Of course, this could also be a big set up to suggest that being a precious snowflake really is better than dedicated your entire life to learning good technique. Since they openly said they never gave a shit about how non-existent Cyrus’ technique was because he’s just so damn precious and special. (And I like Cyrus. He’s no Jose. But he’s really not a dancer and they should critique his dancing not his awesome uniqueness.)
But then I also thought it was BS that Cyrus only had that one jive, which is what screwed up Eliana. Chehon just magically got his old partner and a Cha Cha, when he could have been paired up with the other ballet dancer or the little pistol. So this show seemed to be about 2/3 telling us that Chehon is really likeable and way better than Cyrus but then ending on “but he’s no ballroom dancer, while Cyrus is so precious that if he loses then Tinkerbell dies and takes the American dream with her.” Who knows.
KI was also shocked, but so happy, when Chehon was named to the final four. It did seem like they were setting it up for a Cole/Cyrus final. I am bummed about Cole, but like everyone else, I felt it was impossible for Cyrus to leave at this point.
The I’m very happy to see Witney go. Everytime she danced, I kept thinking that I wish Lindsey had gotten the 3rd spot. I liked hee personality more, I thought she was a better all around dancer, and wish she could have gotten the exposure. I know Lindsey probably wouldn’t have gotten into the final 2, but I just did not enjoy Witney at all this week.
I was fine with the judges pointing out Chehon’s screw ups in his ballroom with Witney, until no one mentioned the malfunction Cyrus had in his dance with Tiffany. Can they make it any more obvious that they want a Cyrus win? I’ve actually been more forgiving than some with Cyrus bc this is my first season watching, and i do like him immensely. But the overpraising and non critical response by the judges has turned me off. Ill be power voting for Chehon on Tuesday, not only because i don’t want a Cyrus win, but because Chehon is amazing and deserves it.
Which brings me to my last point: I dont believe i have ever, in all my years of reality competition shows, seen a show try to set up someone to lose more. Pairing Chehon with Witney (again) to do ballroom (again) while the other four got new partners and genres that they do fairly well (not including Cyrus because he doesn’t do any of them well) was complete BS. As stated before, i don’t like Witney, but i even felt a little bad for her, considering how she got her genre, but can’t really do her thing because its the ONLY genre he’s really struggled with. The final couples should have been Witney with Cole (i think they would have been awesome in a Ballroom together), Eliana and Chehon (I have also been dying to see them do something together, and the routine Cole/Eliana got would have been just as good is not better with Chehon instead of Cole). Tiff/Cyrus pairing was fine and the only one that made sense to me.
Great recap Pottymouth. Thank you for pointing out the C thing the guys did at the beginning because i missed that, even though I noticed they did each other’s styles. I have to ask though, why didn’t you share your thoughts on the solos?
I’m so annoyed at the way the show has been setting Cyrus up to win since the beginning. Giving him hip hop, while sticking Chehon with ANOTHER effing ballroom routine? (And I didn’t even think he was all that fabulous in the hip hop.) The judges NEVER criticize Cyrus, at all, ever. Would he be where he is if the judges weren’t fawning all over him all the time? In the fifties number, it seemed like he did no actual dancing, and they were still kissing his a$$.
I’ve also noticed that they tend to load up on Cyrus at the end of show. In this episode, despite the fact that each dancer had three performances, Cyrus didn’t show up until an hour and fifteen minutes in, and all his routines were in quick succession. Because he’s always at the end, I think he sticks in viewers’ minds more.
I love Cole. I think he was robbed. Witney seemed like the right choice to eliminate on the women’s side. I will say, though, that although Tiffany was really good in the first number, I thought Benji definitely outdanced her. My eyes were glued to him the whole time.
This was the best episode of the season — but I still say that this is the worst season ever. I really hope the series doesn’t end on this note, because it’s really a great show that deserves better. If Fox bails on it, hopefully another network will pick it up.
As I said last week, I think part of the reason many of us were so uninvested this year is that the weekly performances were somewhat useless, because the dancers had to dance them without knowing if they were in danger, and if they went home that same night, the audience never got a chance to vote on those performances. So basically, any of the routines could wind up being a throwaway if the dancer got booted despite their performance.
And part of what makes this season so bleh is Cyrus’ unbelievable persistence in it. I honestly don’t think that his skills in his specialty are anywhere special enough to justify his presence in the final 4. And what it means is that a good portion of the performances are almost guaranteed to suck (no powerful boy-boy routine this year, unless one of the choreographers get very creative). Blech.
I listened to the critiques of Cyrus’ Broadway and Chehon’s cha-cha back to back and the difference was startling. There wasn’t one word of criticism or suggestion for getting better for the Broadway. It was all roses and rainbows. In the second, Mary just rakes Chehon over the coals for not only failing to get the movement, but also for basically ruining Witney’s last night on the show. It sure did feel like a set up, so they can remind everyone next week, “See! Cyrus isn’t the only one who isn’t versatile.” I”ll bet we’ll see little reminder clips of that botched lift, too. Count on it.
It must be so discouraging to Chehon to work hard all week, then have to be reamed out on national TV, when Cyrus’ issues are ignored. It makes me crazy. I’ll be voting like a mad woman on Tues. night. I don’t want Chehon to go down without a fight.
This season wouldn’t be the worst if it wasn’t for the format. And the love for Cyrus. Those two things together have ruined the show. (the format makes the choreography worthless IMO)
Cole should have been in the final. Period. His body is work is so much more well rounded that Cyrus. I really do think Cheon is going to win for the guys, as I think there’s enough shock out there that people will vote for him. But Nigel needs to learn this is his fault for never pushing Cyrus and never giving him a real critique.
I’m happy that the ploy didn’t work with Whitney as she was Nigel’s sexy girl that he wanted in the final and kept saving. Tiffany has grown on me. But Eliana has been my favorite since her audition and she should win. Bad music aside, I thought her hip hop with Twitch was adorable and she did the best she could with crap music and steps.
And I HATED Tyce’s suitcase dance. Such a great premise, but then the holocaust music and Tyce’s need to have a STORY! (jazz hands) and DEPTH! (jazz hands) is bored and tired. It reminded me of the blackbird piece in its desperation for tyce to make himself look like a affected artist. There are plenty of other choreographers on the show whose personalities drive me crazy…ahem Mia. But their work is amazing and stands on its own.
I was super sure when we were in the Green Mile round that although Cyrus was a crowd pleaser he would never make it to the end, Whitney was going to the this year’s girl favorite and Cole was the dark horse that would take the title for the men…
Wrong on all three
As much as I love Eliana…I am pulling for Tiffany. I said it a few weeks back, but they have given her the most diverse choreography all season. If I recall she has done contemporary, ballroom, hip-hop, disco, swing, and broadway. Now she is a jazz dancer and I don’t recall her getting her own genre since the Sonja piece with Audrey in the meet the cast episode at the beginning. I wouldn’t be mad if Eliana won, but I think Tiffany should win.
Between Cheon and Cyrus…Cyrus I’m afraid is going to win. I like Cyrus, but I feel that the producers and the Choreographers did him a great disservice by modifying the dances to him and his abilities. I am sure they didn’t want him to crash and burn (and make them look bad) but had they pushed him more…I think he could have met the challenge. But we’ll never know.
In addition, I didn’t love this season. They keep messing around with the format and trying to make it work better…but I think the old way was just fine. I think this may be the last season which makes me sad.
I hear ya Honeybee– I think Cyrus will win too—and it infuriates me. I love Cole but see his limitations. Chehon is a beautiful dancer and has an abundance of talent.
I loved Eliana and came to the Tiffany party late in the season. I see how she has developed as a dancer adn I always give points for that.
It feels so weird to know that the show is on tonight instead of tomorrow. Anyway….
sagittariuskim: I feel the same way about getting wow performances one week before the finale. With the amount of talent they cast this year EVERY week should have brought at least two or three great performances. SO frustrating.
Percysowner: I think that’s my biggest issue with Cyrus; the complete lack of critique. It almost makes me wish for mean girl Mia back at the judges’ table because I think she would’ve ripped him a new one. Sigh.
georgiababe: I really want Chehon to win for the guys as well! I was just hoping that we’d lose Cyrus before the finale. I’d say why but we all know why and have been over it time and time and time again.
vallegirl: I like your logic about Chehon, but then again, I’d really like to see him take it so I am totally on board with whatever helps that outcome, lol. Precious little snowflake = soda up my nose. The snortlaugh can be a painful, painful thing.
Lauren: I didn’t go into what I thought of the solos because for most of them they felt very been there, seen that for me. I think the only one I really liked was Chehon’s because he went a little dark with it. Otherwise the others felt like more of the same to me, so after the first couple I was like…pleh.
ANTM Fan: Goo call on the loading up on Cyrus at the end of the show! I remember thinking where the fuck is he? during the show because he seemed like everyone else had already gone twice. I will fully buy into your conspiracy theory on that one!
Lizbot: I agree; it really is the worst season. Which pisses me off because, again, they cast dancers that are full of talent and then STILL screwed the pooch! And the results and performances on the same night are only part of the problem; we had that same sort of format in season one and that didn’t hamper the show for me that season. They’ve just screwed around with it TOO much, trying to fix something that was never broken, and now they HAE broken it. I blame Nigel.
KT: I think that’s why a lot of people are really pissed; it’s not Cyrus’ fault, but how can they expect him to grow as a dancer when they don’t even critique him?!?? Wha a bunch ofassholes.
L: I get why you hated Tyce’s dance; I actually really loved it, but I think that has more to do with Chehon and Kathryn than anything else. They were so phenomenal together and in it. Tyce WISHES he had the talent that Mia has in her pinkie toe.
Honeybee: You know, in the green mile I thought that Cyrus would make it a while and then get voted out (after the top ten of course). But I also thought(or hoped) he’d show some REAL growth like Legacy or Ivan (to compare him to Twitch wouldn’t even be fair). I think that’s what makes it even MORE disappointing that he’s made it to the finale. And I agree, he’ll probably win which will be even worse. Sigh x 2.
hot cawfee: I also came to the Tiffany party late but am fully onboard! I’ll be happy with either girl winning (though the frmer ballerina in me edges over to Eliana Juuuuuuuuuust a wee bit!).
As always, thanks for reading and sharing your comments, Gasmi. Tonight should be interesting and I’ve already heard some rumors about pairings tonight that are aggravating me if they’re true. Ah well, I guess we’ll know what’s fact or fiction soon enough!
SWAK, PottyMouth
Bleh, I am not even excited about tonight. With Cyrus in the finals, at least half of the dances are guaranteed to suck
This sucks. My Tuesday tv is already pretty full with Dance Moms and Face Off. *^&% you Fox.
I give Cyrus credit for the effort, but shame on the show for never making him dance anything other than to his strengths. No ballroom, no contempary, 1 jazzy like dance. They, the producers set him up for this by never making him challenge himself like they made others.
What a shame.
Disappointed in Fort Myers
Lets be real. This show is so far to the left, I wouldn’t be surprised if
Michelle Obama showed up to present Cyrus with his trophy. Hard work and sacrifice are no longer
Requirements for advancement Just click your heals together and wish yourself back to Kansas.
Sorry about the soday, PM.
@Dray: I’m sorry, so only people on the right side of the political spectrum work hard and sacrifice? Ooookay…
No one said that Cyrus doesn’t work hard. I’m sure that he works as hard as he can, he’s just not able to adapt to other styles the way that some of the other dancers can.
