Suddenly, Martinez of STD is shooting at Rick and Hershel!!!!!! Meanwhile, Carol starts using Axel as a shield; remarkably, every shot (and there are dozens upon dozens) being fired into the prison yard either misses the Rickettes completely or just hits poor Axel over and over.
GOV. IS HERE TOO and it going NUTS shooting. And just like that, Rick suddenly seems like a completely lucid human being.
Per the rules of TWD, everyone’s gun has endless rounds of ammo, but I find it worth noting that unlike with the walkers (taken out with perfect headshots every time), the only person getting hit over and over right now is Axel. Maggie shows up to join the firefight, when all of a sudden a big van busts through the fence. Gov. smiles maniacally.
“Please won’t you be my neighbor?”
Is this Andrea? Who’s driving the van? What the hell? What happens next was totally cray, and I’ve copy/pasted from the notes I type during the episode to convey my immediate reaction:
“WHO IS THE IN VAN? OMFG WALKERS! OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGomgomgomgomgogmogmfogmfogmfogmf” –my notes (eloquent, I know)
Someone in combat gear emerges from the van. Judging by the build it’s possibly a chick; perhaps we’re meant to think it’s Andrea, but I’m calling red herring and guessing it’s the chick she was talking to at the Berlin Wall earlier in the episode.
Then a first happens: Rick runs out of ammo. I don’t think this has ever happened to one of the Rickettes in the history of the show. Satisfied for the time being, Gov. retreats with a final, maniacal spray of machine gun fire.
Glenn suddenly comes back and if he wasn’t fucked up before, he is now! Totally going to blame himself for not being here when this all went down. By this point, there are walkers everywhere, and Mich is on a badass rampage, chopping off walker heads left and right. Rick almost gets bitten but is saved in the nick of time by the Dixons, who’ve returned.
Random mess of thoughts following the siege:
1. These last 10 minutes were awesome sauce.
2. Apparently killing one walker was all it took for Merle to be welcomed back into the fold.
3. The final scene really goes to show the action on this show is a million times better than the dialogue and the writers’ half-hearted attempts at character development.
4. Are Tyrese and friends gone at the point? It seems odd they’d be so unceremoniously dumped from the show. I thought for sure they’d be joining the Rickettes in the fight. Unless they’re still locked up in some other part of the prison?
5. Do you think this event was enough to snap Rick back to reality? Also, this ghost business is child’s play compared to the Gov’s levels of insanity.
If you like it, spread it!:

Your notes about the van of walkers is the same reaction I had! And I really did not expect Axel to get shot! (but loved how Carol used him as a human shield)
They need to stop having happy moments in the courtyard…no good comes of that.
Speaking of no-good. Even dead Laurie f*cks sh*t up! If she werent having crazy Rick follow her all over the place, he would’ve been in a better position during the gov’s raid.
And holy crazy. Did you SEE rick’s face at the end? That is a WHOLE other kind of crazy there.
I can kind of understand Maggie’s reaction to Glen. Even if she wasn’t raped, she was in a very vulnerable position and she’s just as angry that she couldn’t help Glenn as he is that he wasn’t able to help her. They’re just reacting to it differently.
Michonne needs to speak up more. She has valuable information that could help them.
And who was that woman in the van? Where did she go? I didnt see her meet up w/the gov. And how the hell did that guy get up into the tower.
It must be easier to shoot zombies in the head than people shooting back at you because they were missing all over the place.
Hershel just needs to put these people in their places. Maybe he can knock some sense into them with his crutches….because they all need something to get them all back on track.
Rick’s face at the end gave me chills!!!!!!!!! At first I thought bad ass Rick was back, but judging from the previews for the next episode, he is still losing his shiz.
I don’t think Michonne ever speaks up b/c everyone else is so quick to shoot her down.
For me, the whole charm of the zombie apocalypse idea is that it just comes out of nowhere. No cause. No cure. Just deal with it.
The scene with Rick and Hershel at the fence just had me rolling my eyes and sobbing from boredom. Make it stop! Worst choice of character development ever. What’s wrong with allowing Rick to become a badass hero? Or, if they really insist on having him go off the deep end, just get it done already. No need to spend an entire fucking season on it.
The head shot to Axel made me jump. The van actually made me pissed off at the guv’nor. So that was nice. I don’t think the driver was the hot girl on the wall (whom we’ve never seen before, right?), because she was on the wall when Andrea was already looking for the Guv’nor and Martinez. Just another random stunt person who isn’t being paid to act.
And I was kind of disappointed Darryl didn’t put that arrow through Merle’s head.
It was awesome sauce that last couple minutes. It was a Woodbury person on the guard tower which is totally rookie mistake on Rickettes fault to leave that guard tower unmanned in the first place. They should always have someone up there. Can see for miles.
If I was Michonne I would have just shot Rick when he walked out the fucking gates and did not even bother to shut them. He is a fucking liability! Hell no! WTF!? If she had not been there I guess zombies would have gotten in.
I also knew Axel was about to die because he got to talk a lot this episode. It always happens this way. I also thought it was a female in the truck but definitely not Andrea.
I don’t or can’t say anything else about this because I read the comics and it would be a spoiler.
I asked last time but has anyone read the “Road to Woodbury” book or the “Rise of the Governor”? I heard they were good and I was probably going to read them.
I was also sad that that might be all we ever see of Tyrese again. WTF!?
I was so hot after watching Daryl take out all those walkers. God that man is sexy! Nothing is hotter than a competent zombie killing badass. Love him so much!
I also predict Hershel’s death soon. He has been getting a lot of lines and kinda becoming the one talking everyone down as Dale did so you know what that means…..
The Walking Dead is following the Reality TV Rules of How to Deal with Contestants: the person who gets the most dialogue from the beginning of the episode is the one who will be eliminated. Also whoever uses a Sprint phone.
Hey Itchy I left you a comment on the last recap (before this was up) – on The Talking Dead they showed how they do the special effects for Hersel. They have him wear a green sock so they can edit out his leg.
It was a good episode, took about 30 minutes to get to the point, but good. They are ALL GOOD! Also, a great recap Pill
I like your theory about nerdy scientist guy knowing someting about the virus …BTW I wish they would go back to that more often. And yeah, homeboy can not keep it cool! I like how the first chance he got to “keep an eye on Andrea” he blubbered around like a moron. Good job, dude!
I also think the lady Andrea was talking to on the Wall was the lady who busted down the fence with the Taco Truck Full o’ Zombies. But yeah, where the hell did she go after that?
On the Talking Dead, the producer/creator said Tyrese & Co DID leave the prison after Rick’s freakout last week (Thanks for fully explaining that, epsiode—geez) but he wouldnt say whether or not they would return. With all the buzz Tyrese’s character has been getting, I am guessing yes, they will be back.
I finally broke down and got the Walking Dead Compendium 1, which is all the comics written right up to where we are now (Season 3) and then some. I can’t WAIT to read it (but will stop at the spoilers, of course)
I don’t really think the comics offer a lot of spoilers, because the show has deviated from the comics so many times, and with important things. But better safe than sorry!
Tyrese and crew will definitely be back (in my mind, anyway). Kirkman wouldn’t say for sure on The Talking Dead of course, but he hinted. “Maybe we will find out where they are, maybe sooner or later”. I will be pissed if they never bring them back and that’s all we see of Tyrese. What a waste!
The car trunk zombie kill was the best!
I loved the scene with Daryl and Merle. “He’s Korean!” Loved it.
Sorry, my post should say “I don’t really think the comics necessarily offer a lot of spoilers”. Meaning, something that happens in the comics isn’t necessarily going to happen in the show since they change things all the time, sometimes drastically. But I agree that everything in the comics could potentially be a spoiler.
Just wanted to clarify.
@pinklotus…I gotcha
Thanks for the non-spoiler warning of possible spoilers that aren’t really spoilers
LOL
I also thought the girl on the wall was the girl who jumped out of the back of the van, but girl on wall was meatier. Either way, I hate the bitch driving the van. Also, where did she go after she released the zombies.
I predict that Tyreese and crew will be back in the nick of time to help and Rick and the gang fight the Guv’na.
Pinklotus – I also loved when Daryl yelled to Merle that Glenn was Korean. So awesome.
I am so glad that Daryl is back!!!
Thanks, featherhead, I missed that — but it makes perfect sense now. Sometimes the best special FX are the least fancy ones.
I liked the way they flipped the whole Darryl/Merle dynamic. Darryl is definitely the best character on the show — or maybe he’s just the best actor and is the only one who manages to make his character believable? I’d much rather follow the series through his eyes, and wish they’d abandon the Rick character already.
As for Tyrese… I’m still waiting for them to bring back that father and son from the very first episode of Season 1! Whatever they hell happened to them?
The comics do show the fate of the father son from the first episode of the show. That is all I will say about it.
The zombie van was such a good idea in that it worked but holy hell who would do that to someone!?
I think the woman driving the van tried to get away but I am not sure if she did. Governor may have talked her into sacrificing herself. I thought Hershel was for sure a goner at that point. Not being able to hobble away or get shot and then just laying there while the zombies come after him. Not good.
I also would rather the show follow Daryl at this point.
I thought last episode that Merle could be allowed to come to the prison but they would have to agree to keep him in another cell area away from everyone else. A compromise. Keep him locked up.
Everyone at Shawshank was very lucky that only Axel got killed. Rick’s on the crazy train and Glenn is acting like a little shit for some reason. It’s like everyone but Hershel has forgotten they’re in the middle of a ZA. I’m with everyone else in that I hope they don’t drag Rick’s crazy out for the rest of the season. And why couldn’t they have brought back Shane instead of Lori? At least he was easy on the eyes.
I’m glad Daryl’s back but I’m wondering what they’re going to do about Merle. Maybe Daryl can continue to be his awesome self and just tell him to shut the fuck up whenever he opens his mouth.
Andrea needs to wake up or get off my screen. I hate her character so much now, even more than I hated Lori.
Loved this episode for so many reasons – but to give the Rickettes a little slack, shooting at targets that are actively shooting back is a lot harder than shooting at slow moving/still zombies.
There may be a battle royale of the nutjobs, but the Govs brand of crazy is perfectly suited to the ZA while Ricks is more…well, emo. There, I said it. Hopefully there will be a nice big rainstorm soon because I swear I can smell Rick through my TV screen. I cannot even begin to imagine the state of Ricks tightie whities at this point.
I also think that Herschels days are numbered. When he was going from Rick to Maggie to Glenn to advocating for the group as a whole I got such a strong Dale vibe. Poor Herschell may be the sacrifice needed to shake Rick out of his pity party. (and over Lori of all people!)
Andrea is just such a …. god, I can’t. I just can’t with her. Loved the scene when she was trying to get info on the Govs whereabouts and nobody would tell her – and the woman on the wall was full of obvious contempt for her. I think that shocked Andrea – that anyone would dislike the Co-Dear Leader and lie to her face.
When she was with the Rickettes she absolutely had a point about being able to control her own destiny. Carol and Lori embraced the little woman homemaker role with gusto – it made them feel proactive and safe. But it was wrong for them to insist that all the woman accept the same role – just as it was wrong for men to also assume that all the women should be content with being protected and not giving them a way to protect themselves. Ironically it was the Shane who spearheaded the concept of everyone learning to protect themselves and the group that made them successful in staying alive for as long as they have. So yeah – I had empathy for Andrea at one point in time but it is sooo gone. She dumps her friend (with benefits?) Michonne the first chance she gets in favor of ZA luxuries such as clean sheets and dick. Than, knowing that the Rickettes had been held captive by the Gov and the Gov forcing a bro v bro deathmatch she still stays for the promise of (unearned) power and influence. And people doubt this bitch was a lawyer?
Love your recaps Pillania!
Yup…Daryl is a badass zombie killing machine. I loved him telling Merle that is was his own fault that he ended up without a hand. Then again, I love anything Daryl. I’m just glad he’s back. Loved the little nod he gave Rick when he got back.
I laughed a little at Merle’s face after he helped Rick. Like he was all “see? I helped. We’re good right?” I think the idea of keeping him separate from the rest, but dammit if they let MERLE back, they’d better start treating Michonne like she’s one of them. I’m hoping Tyrese and Sasha come back too and when they do Rick better get over himself and let them stay.
I’m worried about Hershel too. I am really hoping they don’t kill him off this season, but every episode I find myself saying to Mr. Yeknom “they better not kill off Hershel”. I like Hershel a lot. More than I liked Dale, but that’s because if there was a ZA, my dad would be the same as Hershel and I’m a big sap.
Yeah I have no idea where that lady driving the zombie van went, but I really wanna know!
I def. think Merle will be allowed into the group. He helped Daryl save Rick. OHHH! Then, everyone will find out Tyrese’s group has come back because they tried to make it out in the wild and they couldn’t, and they will convince Rick to let them stay too. That seems fair.
Itchy – Great point about wanting to know where the man and his some from the first episode are. I don’t think Rick has mentioned them since the beginning of season 2 when he radioed them to let them know the CDC was no longer there.
This group would not make it with out Daryl. I don’t know why I have jumped on the Daryl train during the last 2 episodes. I mean, he is clearly awesome, but I am a Rick girl.
Well, the man and his son were black. So… well, we all know how that goes with this series…
@itchy, that made me laugh out loud, but you might be right.
I really hope Tyrese and Sasha come back, Rick & Co. need all the help they can get. I’m not sure if I care if the father & the son who wanted to jump Carol & Carl come back. They can be zombie chow for all I care.
Oh! If Tyrese and Sasha and Duayne & Morgan(?? is that their names, or did I make that up??) came back Merle’s head my burst from all the ethnicity surrounding him.
I really hope that the father and son (with Tyrese) died. They were both dicks, ZA or not.
I don’t know why the Ricketts don’t think of having Carol step up and become a leader. She practiced doing a c-section on a dead zombie, for crying out loud. That is bad ass!
I’d say the guy’s reaction was kind of normal — they show up at the prison and get treated like scum by people who were obviously too weak to defend themselves. So as long as the Rickettes were unwilling to listen to reason and were forcing them to leave — no doubt to go to their certain death — then yeah, it kind of makes sense to try to get the upper hand.
On the other hand, what doesn’t make sense is the Rickettes wandering around without weapons when they KNOW the governor’s coming to get them.
I liked this episode, but then I’m easily entertained. I’ve been trying to think of a word that describes it and that word is evading me. Maybe someone can help me out.
If you believe everything happens for a reason – Lori visitng Rick and making him leave the prison grounds, Axle (is that his name?) walking around with Carol, Glenn going alone to check out the security in the back of the prison. Rick was outside the grounds and so was armed and able to lay down a line of fire on the Guv. It also saved his head as Axle was the one to take the blast. Axle being with Carol to provide cover when the shooting started. Maggie not with Glenn so she could bring out additional weapons and take out the guy in the guard tower. Glenn being in a vehicle so he could save Hershel. I want to say serendipity, but don’t know if that’s quite right.
I’m losing hope for Andrea. I never pictured her as being gullible, and that’s what she’s appearing to be. Daryl is just too hot for words. I enjoyed how he took ownership of the relationship between him and Merle and shifted the balance of power. When he said he belonged at the prison and Merle was whining, I though what a role reversal.
@itchy – once again you’ve made me chuckle. My husband’s cousin has written a zombie book. In it a group went out on a scavaging mission and one of the guys was very worried. \I’m the only black guy in the group and you know how that always turns out in the movies.\
On the drive home from work yesterday I asked my husband if he supposed that Tyrese and crew were hiding out in the nearby town and would anyone go looking for them to have them come back and help. When he finally figured out what the hell I was talking about, he felt compelled to make sure that I knew that it wasn’t real. He’s often wondered if I knew Star Trek wasn’t real also.
I watched Talking Dead too, and that Kirkman guy is adorable!
I’m with ya all on wanting Tyrese and Sasha to come back, there’s like no one left . . . Axel was on Talking Dead, and he was rather humorous. They show a reel of the killings, and I watched in slo-mo to enjoy the FX, I have to give it to Carol for the look on her face when Axel got shot, just perfection.
Kirkman was defending the whole Lori thing, but I think it sucks. I’m not liking Rick much anymore.
I love the name Luna, Pill, so fitting!
I hope they don’t kill Hershel either, and Michone needs some proper respect, seriously!
The whole of Shawshank needs a good long nap!
I still hope Andrea turns it around, and fights from the inside. I mean, seriously, she saw the tank . . .
I found a lot of the beginning of this episode super super “Kill me now’ slow, but then those last few minutes were SO WORTH IT!
I actually yelled “HOLY CRAPBALLS” when Axle got shot, and making me yell out loud is my high water mark of awesome TV.
So very happy Daryl is back! Has anyone else seen the insanely adorable TWC commercial where he gets yelled at by a soccer mom type and acts all abashed and apologetic? Too fricking cute for me to handle.
LOL annie! No problem. :p
Madeline – I have seen the Daryl/TWD commercial and it’s hilarious!!! Also, I gasped so loud when Axel was shot in the head, I woke up the hubs
I know plockness_monster (Love the name BTW)! I mean, i know I have a fairly serious Daryl crush going anyway, but seeming him be all abashed in the face of a Soccer Mom was just too cute for me to handle. I know, it’s getting to DefCon 5 Crush Level, but I’m powerless against Daryl. LOL!
I’m not a very demonstrative TV watcher when I’m alone, but that Axel moment just blew me away. MORE RANDOM SHOCKING VIOLENCE PLEASE! (And hopefully it’ll be Andrea’s Eva Peron rip off melon going ‘splode)
Oh my god, THANK YOU for the Jack Shepard comparison. I literally said the exact same thing to Mr. Canary during this episode: Rick has become just as hateful as that damn doctor. He’s unfit to wipe his own ass at this point, let alone lead that ragtag bunch. I’d personally like to see more of Carl — never thought I’d say that, but he’s turned stone cold, and would probably be more pragmatic and badass than his crazy old pop.
I’m glad Daryl is back, and actually glad Merle is with him, just because he’s sure to make things more interesting. Also, Michael Rooker is awesome.
itchy…the “too weak to defend themselves” group is what saved those people’s butts when they came into the prison. Turning around and wanting to kill the very people who rescued you does not engender the goodwill of the audience.
I have loved Daryl from the first season. We have a fan group on the forum side of TVGasm for anyone who wants to join. Right now we have a thread with our favorite Daryl quotes.
Okay, tell me how to find this group, cattfan. Can’t believe I’ve missed it!
Oops, cattyfan – but I guess you realize that.
Oh I didn’t say that these were good people, only that his reaction seemed reasonable under the circumstances. Anyway, he should be smart enough to know that he’ll never get anywhere trying to kill off a show’s main characters!
Thanks for the shoutout!
And btw, it has annoyed me since we met Michonne that she NEVER talks, but I’m so thankful to finally have an explanation – she’s rationing her lines! She understands the rules, and she’s smart not to talk.
I wonder in which episode the smoke monster is going to show up?
