Tuesday, May 29

The charming, brilliant, witty, devout, and remarkably rotund English writer Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born on this date in 1874. I adore this man, dead though he has been for many-a-year, and often listen to his Father Brown stories on my iPod while I am falling asleep. Because they are like a warm, fluffy, auditory blanket of coziness.

Cougar Town (ABC 8pm) Finale: When Grayson complains that his life is like “Groundhog Day,” Jules asks for that to be the theme of her bachelorette party; Grayson convinces Jules to elope, but their friends tag along.

Renewal Status: Renewed, on TBS. Also, isn’t everybody’s life like Groundhog Day after turning 30? Quit whining, dude. At least you have weekends.

The Catalina (The CW 8pm) Premiere: A spring break pool party does not go as planned; sparks fly between bartenders Kris and Nancy, who used to date; Morgan, the restaurant general manager, competes in a beach volleyball tournament.

It’s a dream come true! They finally made an entire TV series about that summer Zach, Kelly, and the gang spent working at the beach resort with Carrie Heffernan!

20/20: The Jubilee Queen (ABC 9pm) Princes William, Harry and Andrew, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and members of the queen’s staff talk about Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

If this whole jubilee thing goes in a The Great Mouse Detective direction, can we please have Benedict Cumberbatch be the one to save the day?

Thank you.

LA Complex (The CW 9pm) Finale: Abby and Nick try to advance their careers and take their relationship to the next level; Connor searches for answers; Raquel questions her decisions.

Renewal Status: I can’t find anything concrete on this; an actor on the show said season 2 was going to air in July, but the CW denied this, and while they aren’t definitively saying that it’s been cancelled, they are pointing out that it isn’t on any of their schedules that have been released. So, make of that what you will.

The Real Housewives of Orange County (Bravo 9pm) The ladies travel to Costa Rica; Vicki’s erratic behavior has the others worried; Alexis is confronted on her phony lifestyle.

Please drink the water, please drink the water, please drink the water!

Design Star (HGTV 9pm) Premiere: Designers must team up to make over six rooms in the mansion where they will be living for the season.

All of these people chose their outfits deliberately. All of them.

16 and Pregnant (MTV 10pm) Finale: A Texas teenager’s pregnancy is marked with tragedy.

Renewal Status: I’m sure that as long as teenagers insist on failing to use birth control properly, MTV will be there to show us their crappy boyfriends and psychotic parents.

American Colony: Meet the Hutterites (The National Geographic Channel 10pm) Premiere: The annual harvest puts the Hutterite colony in danger of survival; Claudia shocks everyone.

From the National Geographic Channel Website: “Meet the Hutterites—a small religious colony in rural Montana who holds desperately to their sacred traditions while fighting the modern temptations of the outside world. King Colony is made up of 59 people and they are almost all related. This family lives together, works together, and worships God together, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for their entire lives.” No, thank you.

Big Brooklyn Style (TLC 10pm) Premiere: Lisa helps a woman find a professional look; a grad with low self-esteem needs an outfit for a job interview; a woman needs clothes for a cruise.

An insider’s look at the exciting and glamorous world of plus-sized clothing retailers.

Workaholics (Comedy Central 10:30) Premiere: The guys plan their first acid trip.

About

After giving birth to her fourth child, SuburBint carefully weighed the options and decided that recapping reality TV was probably a better choice in the long run than alcoholism. Liver function tests have yet to confirm the wisdom of this decision. Being an honest-to-goodness recapper is also a dream come true, as she has aspired to do this ever since discovering that such a thing existed way back in 2002.

Her favorite shows of all time include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Coupling, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Firefly, Community, Parks and Recreation, Doctor Who, and Veronica Mars. She can also quote The Big Lebowski in its entirety, and will do so with little to no provocation.

Benedict Cumberbatch is the best Sherlock Holmes ever. Well, Robert Downey Jr was pretty good but they are totally different. I am pretty sure Benedict’s Sherlock would kick RDj’s Sherlock a**. Plus, Benedict Cumberbatch is such a perfectly English name. I just watched Season 2 episode 2 last week and totally didn’t sleep just so I could watch episode 3. Yes, I will probably get the dvd so I can re-watch on my tv. Sorry, that was all so off topic. I just wish more tv would be up to the standard of Sherlock (and Downton Abbey).

‘Saved By The Bell’ reference = awesome! Why does the one girl with her leg up have a thong on? Does she work at the after hours gentlemen’s club that opens in the cabana after the sun goes down? Nevermind, I just looked up the show and it takes place in Miami. I thought it was on Catalina Island of the coast of Southern CA.

I liked Workaholics, but sadly it is only good enough that I can wait until it is streaming on Netflix.

A girlfriend and I stayed at the Catalina a year or so back and it was sort of charmingly seedy. I am terrified to see this show and glimpse what all goes on in a place I slept and showered.

I’ll be watching part 2 of the Hatfields and McCoys…although I admit with the dirt, beards, and monochrome wardrobes, I’m having trouble sorting out who’s who. And that’s just the women…

Carol, I’ll see your Benedict Cumberbatch and raise you a Basil Rathbone (and if you don’t know poker, you have no idea what I just said). I’m an old (don’t even think about it) movie buff and I contend that Rathbone is the quintessential Holmes, although Cumberbatch *giggle* is so much cuter. Of course, a schnauzer is so much cuter than dear Basil.

And of course you would send up GK Chesterton today!! YAY! Many is the time that Hubbycat has pried the Kindle from my fingers when he comes to bed. Not that Father Brown could ever be boring, it’s just that he is such a lovely way to drift off to sl…zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Question: Why does every tv couple seem to want to “take their relationship to the next level”? Exactly what IS the next level? If it’s a Hutterite 24/7/365 (6 this year–shudder), I’m with you, SuperiorB. No thanks.

Great Saved by the Bell reference! When I was reading the description I actually thought that you were describing SBTB with different names and when I scrolled to the caption I dripped tea out of my mouth.

Basil Rathbone is a good Holmes. Personally, my favorite for true-to-the-book-ish-ness is Jeremy Brett, but Benedict Cumberbatch is just… I don’t even know. Sherlock has vastly exceeded my expectations, and I hope they get on the ball with writing season 3 soon! So excited to see how Sherlock Holmes faked his death in this version.

Glad you’re all enjoying the SBTB reference — my brain instantly went there when I saw the photos for The Catalina.

For years I was a member of a society that analyzed and discussed the stories, and the Rathbone/Brett argument popped up from time to time and became quite spirited. I am firmly in the Rathbone camp.

I just added Basil Rathbone’s Sherlock to my Netflix queue and the Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock are now on my instant watch queue. Thanks for all the suggestions. The nice thing about the current Sherlock is they set it in modern London. So it follows the same general stories but with modern twists which help keep it fresh. Also, they don’t underestimate the intelligence of the viewers. They fit so much in, you want to watch it a second time just to catch everything you didn’t the first time.

Carol, I’ve been meaning to catch the new one. I’ll write it on a post-it and put it on…. Hmmmmm… Probably the fridge. I always look at that.

Be gentle about dear Basil… You might find him a bit…. Well, he’s no Benedict, that’s for sure.
