Top Chef Masters Season 4, Ep 6 RECAP Thai One On

Back to the game.  The Chef’s have a beautiful lunch at Lotus of Siam.  And they take inspiration from this meal and decide what they want to cook.

A cube of pork blood, anyone?

Catfish Basil

They will have a $4,000 budget and 30 minutes to shop.  They will be split into two groups to shop.  One will go to “Whole Paycheck” and the other will go to “Not Whole Paycheck.”  As usual the mayhem ensues at the store and they are calling each other on the phones trying to gather all ingredients.  Art is having a hissy fit because he can’t find raw peanuts.

Slow down, Cowboy!!!

Over the phone Kerry is barking orders at Chris, who is like “Slow down and speak clearly so I can understand.”  It’s a disaster.  If they can’t shop together, how will they open a restaurant together?

Patricia simply does not see Art and Lorena in the kitchen so she asks if they can do “Front of House.”  She did ask.  Lorena is pissed.

Yeah, these faces say “Front of House”

But honestly, Art and Lorena are both openly friendly and warm.  Yes, sometimes they are terrifying, but whenever I drive up to the window, Lorena always asks me if I want extra sauce.  And that’s important, y’all!!!

Regular or Fire Sauce?

And… here we have the cat fight.  Chris is a little pissed that he’s cleaning up other people’s stations (I can relate.  The #1 thing I learned in culinary school is how to wash a dish, and usually it was OTHER PEOPLE’S dishes!!).  Patricia tells Lorena that she needs to move her stuff.  6 burners of a 12 burner stove are taken up with her mise en place in various stages of doneness and cleanliness.  Lorena asks Patricia “Where should I put it?!?!?!”  Um yeah, I know where she can put it.  Patricia, rightly says, that Lorena, by this stage in her career SHOULD be able to figure that out.

Talk to the Chalupa

Lorena tells “Pa-TREES-see-AHHH” to “chill out.” Art tells his femmebitch to calm down.  And then it’s over.  But Lorena is offended to the highest level and she felt “More than anything, at that moment, I needed to put Pa-TREES-see-AHHH in her place.”  B*tch please, that wasn’t putting her in her place.  Come sit by me.

Whatever.  But this makes me think that Lorena could be going home.  We will see.

It is decided that Art and Lorena will be seating people and Kerry will cook his dish, but will also be expediting.

I don’t understand how Kerry f.. ed up Pta’s duck, if she actually had EXTRA time to cook it. I thought that the problem was that she served it raw?

@aliens.rock Patrica’s duck was already done when Kerry said he needed 5 more minutes. So she had to recook new pieces because her dish ended sitting to long, and ran out of time.

I loved how flustered Dita had Curtis and the other guys. I wished I could ooze sexuality without even trying like that.

I’m not sad to see Art leave I liked him, but I like Patricia so much more. Has a woman won Top Chef Masters yet? I can’t remember any women winning or getting to the finals, I remember a few getting close.

I actually felt bad for Patricia, I really think she wasn’t TRYING to throw anyone under the bus. She basically served raw duck, knowing she was sacrificing her dish for Kerry’s. IMHO, that is something only a true professional chef, who is confident in her abilities, would do. I feel like she felt pretty bad that Kerry was expediting (and hadn’t had the best time of it) – so kinda felt like she should do whatever she could to make it easier for him on his dish.

Wish she had put up good duck – but glad she didn’t go home for it! I LOVE Patricia and Chris!

I think Patricia may have been better off serving her overdone duck, presumably the skin was crisp and rendered on that one. I was surprised that Art went home, though not entirely displeased. I would have been ok with Lorena going too. Something about her just really grates on me.

Whenever Oseland is on the screen, I just want to scream, “Thumbsucker! Thumbsucker!” Am I the only one??? His teeth give him away. There is just something super-creepy about him. The Mr. Rogers vest only adds to the feeling that maybe he’s Chester the Molester of his neighborhood. Those poor guys at the pool party in the last episode probably couldn’t wait to get home and shower.

So happy Patricia got to stay. I think that it’s great that she called out Lorena for hogging up all the burners and leaving a mess everywhere. As MisRed noted, a HUGE part of cooking is keeping things clean, and a true chef would keep cleaning things as he/she goes and not leave it around (which also begs why the heck Kerry was using that blender last week with the top off. WTF???)

The great thing about this show is that it puts the folks in unusual circumstances to see how they roll/cope, and different ones fall by the wayside. At least at this level, most are professional enough to own up to their mistakes as Kerry did with Patricia and her duck (and unlike Lorena who acted all peeved when called out for making a mess.)

I was laughing at Stone Cold Fox during the quickfire because he truly was flustered and embarrassed. I kept thinking damn, I wonder what’s going through his mind for him to be so uncomfortable.

I’m glad Patricia didn’t go home, too, and thought her dish would have been quite tasty if cooked properly. That’s one good thing about TCM, at least they (mostly) remain professional and own up to their mistakes. Well, except Lorena. And that douche Ludo from another season who, as I recall, blamed everyone but himself.

MisRed thanks for the LMAO moments, of which I had several reading your recap. Every time I look at Patricia, I am reminded of the Austin Powers scene thanks to you. I swear, I can’t even look at her talking head shots anymore.

I remember that ludo guy, the greasy, arrogant french one! He opens up restaurants for one night or something. He was just on an extremely stupid test on Hell’s Kitchen. I thought maybe he owed Gordon money or something.
