Wow. I've NEVER thought of Jordin as fat or even overweight. She's full figured. We also need to think about her genes. Because, you know, her dad is a PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER. What offends me is that, while obesity is obviously a problem in the US, being underweight is far more detrimental to your health than being overweight. Jordin looks like she falls within the healthy weight range for her height and body type. But even if she didn't, I agree with the comment that it is only being brought up because she is female and GOD FORBID a woman not be 95 pounds soaking wet.

I was so pissed about this that I sent an e-mail to Meme and she responded pretty quickly. Here is what she said to me- it's pretty long just to warn you!

i think Jordin is an amazing singer who was judged on her voice and not on her outward appearance in which i might add she is absoltuely beautiful... whoever wrote this is fulla crap. i mean really, are you that down about yourself you wanna try and tear down something that is as beautiful & totally gifted as jordin.. please, grow up.

Remember that big and tall people can carry around much more extra weight and not look obese. I'm a 5'9" woman who carried around easily 40 extra pounds for a decade and it didn't even show. Now I am even heavier (it shows now!). The point is that extra weight is detrimental to your health, no matter whether you look like you are obese or not. When someday I get back down to my skin and bones weight of 160 lbs. (yes, I looked like a skeleton @ 160!) I will still be a big person. I know that Jordin has weight to lose, she knows it. Is she "obese"? I don't think so, that's between her and her doctor. We should be focusing on individual health and not homogenizing the look of Americans. It's never going to happen. Vive la difference!

Fat compared to who? Unrealistic Hollywood types, maybe, but America, no. Fuck that. Jordin looks pretty fuckin average to me and that's why I like her. That could be anyone's sister or best friend up there, with a good voice, living her dream. There's nothing wrong with that.

Jordin Sparks won a plus size modeling competition... meaning she wears a size 12 at the very MOST (plus size models almost never wear plus sizes... they just don't wear size 2) She is 6 feet tall. She is gorgous, smart, talented, and a TEENAGER. One who I pray has the emotional stamina to withstand the media abuse and assessment of her body.

It is absolutely true that being underweight has more health risks than being overweight -- read some sciene and medical journals instead of the press and that will be immediatly evident. Most of the women "role models" we see in the media are dieting (very unhealthy behaviour), or have disordered eating or use drugs or plastic surgery to maintain their ridiculously thin bodies. Not all. Most. These are NOT HEALTHY women folks! Jordin may or may not be healthy -- the only way to know that is by her doing a fitness test, having her blood pressure and other medical checks done. BMI is not reliable and health depends on many other things than BMI or weight on the scales.

What about her emotional health? Which this speaker and her ilk may have damaged beyond repair.

Fitness and genetics are the most important factors for health.

However, that is not the point here. This is a singing competition. She is brilliantly talented. And since when did we choose talent based on body type. Its sexist and racist -- its a horrible attack on an innoncent YOUNG GIRL!
