American Idol: Did Antonella blow it?

ant1.jpg ant2.jpg ant4.jpg ant5.jpg

No apology. No outrage. No explanation. There was no mention at all of the Antonella Barba's sexy photo scandal on American Idol last night. Antonella wore a sexy print mini dress, massacred a Celine Dion song that she dedicated to her brother, wiggled her butt and even made a nasty, misguided comment to Simon Cowell after he criticized her mewlings.

Antonella did not, as expected, address the toilet/topless/lesbian photos that have spread through the Internet and spilled over into the mainstream media. Nor did she apologize for photos showing her posing provocatively at a national war memorial-- though there is a rising anger about that.

Instead, she snapped at Cowell, accusing him of kicking Jennifer Hudson out of the competition. Simon reminded her that it was the voters who did that. In another world, Antonella might well be singing her goodbye tonight...

See the NSFW photos that made Antonella a household name... after the jump...

Based on her performance, Antonella stands a good chance of being eliminated. But based on her popularity, don't count on it (unless Idol does its magic with the phone calls).

Funniest was the taped introduction to her song, which included many snapshots of Antonella and her brother. We expected to see some of those topless numbers pop up.

(Have you forgotten or not seen the photos that caused Antonella Barba to become a sensation, and to have Hugh Hefner say there's a good possibility she could show up in his Playboy magazine? See them here. And remember: They're NSFW-- not safe for work!)

Dialidol.com has Antonella third behind Melinda and LaKisha. Guess vote for the worst really does work! She is so out of her league here but I blame the judges. I cannot believe they put her through to the top 12 girls. As for the photos, I feel sorry for her about the fake ones that were said to be her. But as for the real ones she doesn't get my sympathy. You pose for photos like that, you never know where they'll end up.

murphena, I'm somewhat sympathetic to Antonella on the pictures (not so on her awful warbling, though). She's really just a kid, and how many of us really thought about the long-term implications of our actions when we were 17 or 18? She seems like a sweet girl who is just in way over her head in this competition. Myspace and Facebook are full of pictures a lot worse than her's.

Smoke_Rulz [TypeKey Profile Page]:

The only way she's getting out at this point is if Idol disqualifies her for the pictures, which I doubt will happen. They will also not be mentioning the controversy on air, duh.

There's always the possibility she'll improve next week -- if she can pick a song that she can actually sing well. But like Simon, I thought her performance this week was worse than last week. As soon as I heard she would be singing Celine Dion, I knew it would be a diaster. And she doesn't have the personality to overcome mediocre singing like Kellie Pickler did.

Agreed, Smoke_Rulz. Why on earth would AI mention them?

I was thinking that if Antonella had another off-week, the judges would have been kind and told her that her shaken demeanor was understandable. I thought they'd attempt to defend her name at least -- if not the singing; but they didn't. Three-fourths of the US (hell, maybe even the world) believed that this beautiful girl was a soft-core porn starlet and some still do even though the hoax was exposed. Some stupid Americans STILL believe Iraq has WMDs (some of my relatives) even though every politician in DC has said otherwise. I don't think it would have hurt to have the judges defend the person standing before them the other night. A lie is a lie and this one was horrible. While I am not a fan of hers, I do feel sorry for the smear campaign that was focused upon her.

As for the pictures at the war memorial, they were racy and inappropriate; but she is still a kid. Not every kid would no this, but I am not going to hold this against a young girl for the rest of her life. People that do need to get a life. Do people honestly find this more offensive than the revolting pictures taken of our "respectable" service men and women humiliating those lesser humans (to them) known as Arabs? I am repulsed just recalling those images.

I am tired of hearing Simon's praise of Jennifer Hudson. He praised a few of her performances, but he also said she was "out of her league" in this competition (AI). After the Oscars, he was interviewed during which he said he felt like Jennifer's "foster parent." What?!? And lastly, he took credit for putting Jennifer Hudson on AI and said it was the American viewers/voters who got rid of her. The second part of the statement is true (but that isnt' saying much -- look at who America kept in office); but I don't recall Jennifer being Simon's Wild Card pick that season. Nope, that would be Randy Jackson who SHOULD be taking full credit for advancing her on the show. I like Simon, but sometimes he plays the wrong tune to give himself unnecessary credit.

Oh, and I did like Antonella's dress.

Complteley off the subject, but has anyone addressed the issue of Melinda Doolittle's GIANT, FREAKING HEAD!?
I wish I was able to do a screencap...
