Idol takes American Band stand

A few months ago, the folks at American Idol surprised us during an elimination show with word that they were about to do some good with a telethon called Idol Gives Back. Last night, they got back to being greedy.

Not satisfied with the dozens of hours of airtime they're already hogging on Fox, the producers had Ryan Seacrest announce that they're going to give CBS' Rock Star franchise a run for its money with a new show that for now is going by the name The Search for the Next Great American Band. Seacrest said they're looking for musical groups of all ages and sizes, and the accompanying video ran the gamut from zydeco to oompah to hair bands.

The bands will be tested each week by being forced to play in various styles and themes. Here comes Bee Gees night...

Like Idol, American Band will start with auditions. The pack will be whittled to 10 semifinalists, who'll perform for a live audience. Viewers will vote and three bands will battle in the finale.

The show will stand alone from Idol with no crossover in judges or host. It will also differ in that it will go into the groups' back stories and show the effects of competition and fame and pressure on the bandmembers.
