There were five thousand empty seats-- a far cry from last year's 16,000 fan sellout-- and lots of yawns in what was described as a "nearly three-hour karaoke-like show":
The only time the show even came close to breaking from script was when Richardson referred to Wednesday's bridge-collapse tragedy in Minneapolis after a group version of "America the Beautiful."
"We want to offer you our deepest, most heartfelt sympathies," he said, praising "the heroes of this tragedy."
Then the horn player played Taps.
Classy.
The critic for the Minneapolis Star Tribune said Lakisha Jones, Melinda Doolittle, Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks (dedicating a song "to family in attendance and a great-grandma who recently passed away"): provided the high points; Gina Glockson's and Chris Sligh's Fall Out Boy diet, Blake's Time of the Season and Phil Stacey's Blaze of Glory (in an "all-leather Matrix-derived outfit) provided the lows.
And the absolute worst? You guessed it: "Sanjaya's gyrating The Way You Make Me Feel (Michael Jackson). His moonwalk was nearly as clumsy as his singing."
The tour lurches into Milwaukee tonight.
The auditions for Season 7 move to Dallas tomorrow.
