Just when the Antonella Barba sexy photo scandal dies down for a couple of days, the ghost of topless photos past comes back to haunt American Idol and accuse the show of All-American hypocrisy.
Frenchie Davis was a plus-sized African-American singer who got the boot in the 2003 season because she'd once been paid to pose topless photos for a website. She's suggested, and this morning protesters are declaring, that Antonella is being allowed to stay on the show because she's a white girl!
LA civil rights activist Najee Ali of Project Islamic H.O.P.E. is set to lead a "Anti-American Idol Rally" outside the Kodak Theatre (site of the show's finale) about fifteen minutes from now.
"It's obvious that it's a racial bias... when you have a situation where a black contestant is punished and a similar situation happens to a white contestant and there is no punishment and they're allowed to continue on the show," he says. "They can't have a rule for white contestants and have a different rule for black contestants."
Frenchie adds: "I couldn't help but notice the manner in which she was dealt with was the complete opposite of how I was dealt with... I'm certainly not interested in pissing people off, but this is an unfairness that can't be ignored."
Now, as far as the official story goes, Antonella never posed professionally and was blindsided by the posting of her amateur modeling shots and college girl-on-girl explorations. She gained valuable sympathy from producers and the public when everyone agreed that she was not, as alleged, the woman in sex act photos (until someone comes up with the OJ-Bruno Magli shots of Antonella wearing acrylic nails).
And it didn't hurt that Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest all confirmed support for Antonella while they were lounging with Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion.
The only blip in the Antonella story this week has been the leaking of a few more shots (NSFW) of her stripping sessionon the National World War II memorial, and some more squeaks about her siding with Hitler by desecrating the shrine. No kidding.
We'll keep you up to date on the rally...
Frenchie, by the way, is now on Broadway in Rent.
See the latest NSFW shots here.
UPDATE: The World of Wonder gang happened upon the protest rally. Apparently it wasn't much, as they report here.

It is fishy, but I imagine what the producers will say is that Frenchie posed for an adult website with intentions for people to jack off to her, and then she didn't tell the producers. Antonella, on the other hand, was just goofing around with her friends.
But yes, it's still a very blurry line...

I don't watch American Idol, I don't care about Frenchie, and I don't care about Antonella (although there is a Facebook group called "I had gym class w. Antonella Barbra: She plays kickball as bad as she sings" which my friend is a member of and I find it hilarious). . .HOWEVER, I do think this sounds fishy. It IS a little hypocritical.
Isn't the point of the winner to be a good role model for America? Sure, everyone makes mistakes, but if you're going to punish one contestant for posing provocatively, punish the other one, too. Whether or not they get paid for it or not, it's still the principle of it . . .is this person a good American Idol for us?
Maybe Frenchie was disqualified because she was black, fat, not as attractive as Antonella or just more talented . . .none of that matters. What matters is she was kicked off for racy pictures and Antonella hasn't been. It's f*cked up.

Don't worry, Frenchie. In a few more weeks, there won't be any white girls left on the show, anyway.

I think there's a world of difference between being paid for pics that are going to be put on a website, and having private pictures leaked on the net. Hell I'm sure almost all of us have racey pics of ourselves lying around (since digital photography means that one doesn't have to worry about taking such things in to be developed). However, best to keep those on one's own hard drive.
That's not to say, I don't think she's a talentless skank that has no business being on the show, and I do wonder if it would've been handled the same all things being equal. But I do think that the difference in intent is far from a matter of hairsplitting.

I've been making this point for weeks. It's about time others have taken notice.
I honestly don't think it's a race issue as much as I think it's a looks issue. Even I will admit that Antonella is physically beautiful while Frenchie is overweight and not as attractive. Sad to say America is a very superficial society.

I agree, 626. I don't know if it's as much as race as it is a billion different variables. I have no idea. But, I think it's wrong anyway.
The "intent" is not important to me at all. There are pictures of me dancing on a stripper pole, but I'm FULLY clothed. If those were ever "leaked out" . . .whatever. I took them. If people are offended, I'm sure it wouldn't matter if I got paid for them or not. I would have still been the one posing in the pictures.
Antonella still posed in hers. And if she was smarter, she would have gotten paid to do them.

Chronic is right - Frenchie got PAID. Antonella is just a skank. She'll be voted off soon enough anyway.

Hmmmm, maybe my assumptions are wrong.
I assume just about anyone under the age of say 45 has naked pics of themselves (come on, I'm sure it's not just me). By contrast, I also assume that very few people have been paid for them to be knowingly posted on the internet.
I just think people should be allowed to do whatever they want to privately. Although I would be curious to know who the pics were initially intended for.

Of course American Idol is racist, that's why there hasn't been any black winners.

actually Firecat, not sure if your being sarcastic or not but Ruben and Fantasia both won and were black...so if your not being sarcastic your way off

I'm thinking that firecat was being sarcastic. I mean playing the race card is a little outrageous here. To all the black people out there - not all white people are out to bring you down. I know, sounds crazy, but it's true. Also - the fact that the photos of Frenchie were on a porn site with naked children. C'mon. Not that Antonella is a saint. She is clearly a trashy skank. But she is not in the pornography industry.

For the most part I agree with you goobs, HOWEVER, I don't think the race card is "outrageous" at all in this case . . .

626 said, "Sad to say America is a very superficial society."
Was this the proof that you needed to make that statement or have you known this for a very long time? I hope it is the latter. :(
I have to agree with another poster, though, who said that the two circumstances are different. One was paid and the other wasn't -- BIG difference. The intentions of both of these girls were different: one knew she'd be posted all over the internet for money and the other posed for some personal (although trashy) photographs.
It isn't illegal in most states to be a slut but it is illegal to be a prostitute.

to be clear - there's a big difference b/w getting paid to pose seductively for some pics and being a prostitute.

I agree that posing on a WWII memorial is not a private picture...
