"...You had a bad day! The camera don't lie! You're coming back down and you really don't mind! You had a bad day!"
We were all looking forward to singing along with Daniel Powter when it was time to say goodbye to the American Idol eliminees last night-- so imagine out dismay at when we stepped down off the couch when the four losers were sent off amid a wordy, downer power ballad.
Well, turns out there's a good reason the great "nyaa-nyaa!" pop song Bad Day has been replaced for good by a song called Home, Idol vet Chris Daughtry's song about missing his wife. See, when Idol exposure turned Bad Day into a huge hit, Powter was already signed to Warner Bros.-- so the Idol team didn't make a penny.
Idol owns Daughtry, who's signed to the official Idol music label, RCA/19.
Of course, the US head of 19 Entertainment swears it's all a matter of quality.
"I brought a rough version of 'Home' and played it for (executive producer) Nigel Lithgoe. He called up Simon Fuller right away, and they both agreed right away that the song had the sentiment to be the perfect Idol exit song," Iain Pirie told Daily Variety. "It seemed to fit perfectly."
Right. Daughtry's debut disc has sold two million copies. There's no word if "home" will be released as a single. But it's bound to be a popular iTune download. So here goes:
I'm staring out into the night
And trying to hide the pain
I'm going to the place where love
and feeling good don't ever cost a thing,
And the pain you feel's a different kind of pain
I'm going home to the place where I belong
where your love has always been enough for me
I'm running from you know I think you got me all wrong
I don't regret this life I chose for me
But these places and these faces are getting old
So I'm going home...
Not quite as catchy, right?

The song was just terrible! Not catchy at all! I so missed "had a bad day"...

Sorry, I love this song, and I happen to think it's infinitely better than "Bad Day." :) They're playing the accoustic version during the closing montages, and apparantly just the choruses. The verses wouldn't fit too well. But it's still way better than Daniel Powter.
