Tyra Banks is fat... Right?

tyraswim2.jpg tyrafatsuit.jpgtyrapeople.jpg tyraswims.jpg

Back in November 2005, Tyra Banks fitted herself with a "fat suit," not to realize her dream of becoming Oprah, but to experience what it's like to be a typical, 350 pound member of her audience. She reported that she was shocked at the stares and laughter she encountered (never considering it may have because she looked like a character from Eddie Murphy's The Klumps).

But today, despite double duty hosting The Tyra Banks Show and America's Next Top Model, the former supermodel's managed to pack on the pounds for real. And now that some websites pointed it out, she's on a rampage to convince the world she's not fat... or is fat... but okay with it... or angry that someone said she was fat... when she is... or isn't... or...

Which is why she's gone all Kirstie Alley on the cover of People.

Spurred on by Egotastic!, and other sites that recently ran a couple of chunky tabloid swimsuit pics under the headline, "Tyra Banks is fat," Tyra ran to People and offered to show some skin if she got the cover.

The five-foot-tenner tells the magazine that since she "retired" two years ago, she's packed on at least 30 pounds since her Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue days, tipping the scales at 148 to a whopping 162 pounds (imagine Oprah rolling that out in a wheelbarrow). She admits that she can't fit into "jeans that used to fit a year ago," has a "fat roll" on her back, cellulite-- and snores-- but insists, "I still feel hot.

"I've made millions of dollars with the body I have, so where's the pain in that? If I was in pain, I would have dieted. The pain is not there-- the pain is someone printing a picture of me and saying those (horrible) things."

So she's admitting the critics are right, just annoyed that they noticed and pointed it out-- and she blames "camera angles" on those beach shots (we'd credit the camera angle on the People cover shot). We guess Tyra's one step closer to that Oprah empathy.

in the meantime, someone stop at the checkout counter and try to see if she's wearing Kirstie Alley- thigh-slimming sheer nylons under that one-piece.

And the new great debate begins: Fat? Or not fat?

I've got three words for you:

"Tyra's Panty Party"

626 [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Phat maybe, but not fat. Nowhere close

Well, TB, I think you may have misinterpreted the article or didn't read the whole thing or something. She did say that yes, she's bigger than when she was a model, but she's by no means fat and that she's happy with not being stick thin. Basically, she's saying that its ok to not be bony as hell, if you want to interpret her words. You could just put the actual article up or the quotes w/in context, then we'd know what she's actually saying and interpretation wouldn't be necessary.

Tiger,

Reread what Tb said, I dont think is off the mark at all from what she said in the article. In a nutshell they are both saying "Im fatter, and thats fine, why you gotta be mean about it?" Thats the article I read in People and thats what TB said.

Unless Im missing something now...

I think the real problem in the "fat" photos of her is her hair color and style. Way too long, limp and light.

Tyra looks great no matter her weight, and kudos to her for being honest about the weight she's gained--good for her! Bony=gross and not sexy.

zoobabe [TypeKey Profile Page]:

The Tyra on the cover in the red suit is not the same weight as the Tyra in the black suit. That's not a camera angle. She either lost weight since then or someone airbrushed her thigh bulge out of the cover pic.

zevonia [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I agree with zoobabe, that picture's got to be airbrushed. It's sop at magazines to airbrush the life out of a photo. Really, with the technology today, anyone can be a photo model just fix all the flaws before you publish!

katybee [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Actually, I think it's the cut of the red suit. The black one was cut high and pinched at her thighs; the red one has more of a boy cut which is a lot more flattering for her body.

But yes, there has been some airbrushing or at least a good deal of makeup. Her skin is positively glowing in the cover shot.

Lc88 [TypeKey Profile Page]:

shes not fat, but her hair is ugly as hell.

kvc [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Maybe the issue isn't whether she's "fat" (what, there's some official legal threshold?) but whether she is larger/curvier/weighs more than she did when she modelled. Yes, she is/does. Is she obese? Not by a long shot. Is she plus size? Not by a long shot. Is the tone of your post ridiculous (oh no, she's not a praying mantis anymore, she should just kill herself and get it over with)? Hell yes.

CDob [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I think it was a BAD angle on the infamous black suit photo. Look at the difference in her legs in the photo on the very left and the very right. She looks much thinner in the left one.

Lindsey Jones [TypeKey Profile Page]:

dude, the media has NOTHING better to do than to talk about how much weight celebrities have gained or lost!its so mean.i hate it!&& it needs to stop.peoples weight change all the time for different reasons!so leave em' alone!
