The Academy Awards® race is on

oscarposter.jpgOscar season begins officially this morning as nomination ballots for the Academy Awards® are being mailed out. This will be the 79th annual Academy Awards®, seventy-nine being the apparent average age of the Academy voters and the comparative age of the stodgy Oscar telecast in comparison to all the other awards shows cramming the TV schedule.

Dreamgirls is supposedly one shoo-in for a Best Picture nomination, and you can bet the Christmas death of James Brown will give a sentimental supporting actor boost to Eddie Murphy for his role as a JB-inspired singer in the flick.

It may also help offset the early backlash he's received for being such a primadonna prick in his glory days.

Ballots go out to 5,830 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, many of whom hand them over to their wives, kids or housekeepers to fill out. The forms have to be sealed and in the hands of the accountants at Pricewaterhouse Coopers by January 13th and nominations will be announced on January 26.

The Academy Awards® show will be broadcast February 25 on ABC, with Ellen DeGeneres as first-time host. Potential highlight: Don Knotts in the "In Memoriam" segment.

How about you? Any early Oscar picks? Does McG have a shot?(Full disclosure: His Charlie's Angels flicks are two more of Tabloid Baby's Top 50 movies of all time.)

Please, Dreamgirls winning Best Picture would be ridiculous. It CANNOT compare to the more deserving and original movies we've seen this year. Anyone that's rooting for it has to be braindead.

The Departed, The Queen, Letters from Iwo Jima are undoubtedly better films (bonus: without Beyonce's hideously wooden acting) that were BY FAR better reviewed.

Hopefully the Academy does what its done many times in the past and go for the real art (American Beauty), and not the hype (Titanic), as it has also done many times.

I sure as hell hope that Eddie Murphy doesn't pull the Jamie Foxx "must sing in character at all awards shows" schtick.
