Gilmore Girls going... gone!

It's official. Gilmore Girls is cancelled and will be gone by the end of the month.

The axing has been rumoured for months, but recently there was talk there'd be one more 13-episode season to wrap things up-- but only if Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, who play mother and daughter Lorelai and Rory Gilmore-- would extend their contracts.

Sources close to the show say the network and the studio were unable to give them enough wheelbarrows full of cash to get them to sign on. The cancellation was announced this morning.

Girls was created for the WB, where it debuted seven seasons ago and was one of its most popular shows. And it's been the rare show that's done well for the CW, after moving to the new network created from the merger between UPN and WB last year. It's even held it own against American Idol.

The CW and Warner Bros. issued a joint statement mourning the loss of their cash cow:

"Announcing the final season of Gilmore Girls is truly a sad moment for everyone at The CW and Warner Bros. Television.

"This series helped define a network and created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television's most memorable, lovable characters. We thank Amy Sherman-Palladino, Dan Palladino, Dave Rosenthal, the amazing cast led by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as well as the producers, writers and crew for giving us this delightful gem for the past seven years. We would also like to thank the critics and Gilmore fans for their passionate support and promise to give this series the send off it deserves."

Awww...

The series finale is set for May 15.

So Sad:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I'm surprised at how sad I am about this. Mostly I think it's because I can't see how they could possibly wrap up the story in a satisfactory way in such a short time.

AC:

Honestly, this show has definitely lost it's spark since Rory went away to school. It just isn't the same. For me, it has evolved to more of a comfort thing.

I cannot see how they can wrap things up so quickly, either. It seems virtually impossible.
