Lads list the "crappiest" commercials ever

It's true. The era of TiVo has denied many of our younger readers the sublime pleasure of sitting through truly awful commercials (or adverts, if you're one of our readers in the UK). Anyway, the boys at Maxim, the boy's mag, took the time to scour the world for what they call the "crappiest" commercials ever.

Make sure you watch the above clip to the very end... then see the rest... after the jump...

Is SpongeBob NoPants a danger to kids?

Maybe you've seen this Burger King spot that hangs on a very corny joke: a guy emerges from a bathtub with a sponge on his head. He says to his wife: "Hey, honey. Guess who I am. Come on. Who am I? SpongeBob!" Then he gestures downward, below the view of the camera. "No pants." Mom stares. Cut to a full body shot. He's covered in suds in all the important places.

Well guess what? A bunch of TV critics and watchdogs are saying the commercial uses "adult nudity" to appeal to children (the version posted above is a censored "above the waist" version).

As if Burger King burgers aren't bad enough.

'Super' proposal finds life on Mars

Have you seen this? The treacly pre-Valentine's Day fable that will have millions of women asking their boyfriends/husbands, "Why can't you be so romantic?" is spreading this morning. Rand Fishkin had attempted to propose to his girlfriend in a commercial during the Super Bowl. His plan to solicit money from strangers through a website didn't work out, and his spot didn't make the line-up.

But adtime on the CW is a lot cheaper and he was able to buy a spot during Veronica Mars, supposedly his girlfriend's favorite show.

See her reaction after the jump...

As it turns out, it's not Prince's Satanic shillelegh shadow from the halftime show that's causing post-Super Bowl trauma across the nation-- it's those macho jock commercials. Today, Masterfoods USA pulled the spot showing two mechanics who wind up in an accidental kiss after sharing a Snickers bar-- then reacting by pulling out clumps of chest hair (to "do something manly").

The ad ranked #9 on USA Today's list of the Top Ten Super Bowl ads, but groups like the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation went ballistic, saying it promoted anti-gay prejudice and condoned violence against gay Americans.

Adding insult to the insult was a Snickers website showing Super Bowl players reacting to the ad:

Bud Light Super Bowl ad was a slap in the face

Once was a time you could look forward to watching the Super Bowl just for the commercials. This year, the advertising Schmedricks were a little less inspired-- even handing over precious airtime to ideas sent in by amateurs (tell those guys in the Chevy car wash commercial to put their shirts on).

One of the bright spots in the rough-and-tumble collection was a Bud Light ad in which the which face-slapping replaces the fist bump as a greeting. So original was the concept that the ad ends with an old ad man congratulating the new kid for "saving the account."

Not so fast. A comedy troupe claims the idea was stolen from a bit on their website!

See the original after the jump...
