Mandy returns to Criminal Minds!

Mandy Patinkin will be back on Criminal Minds next season, after all.

For one episode. For one scene.

CBS announced that the divalike Mandy will show up on the October 3rd episode to provide closure for his character, the FBI analyst Jason Gideon, who is suddenly disappearing from the series because Mandy decided last month to simply not show up for work on the first day of the third season without telling anyone why-- stopping production, throwing the storylines into disarray and generally pissing off everyone he worked with.

Mantegna in for Mandy on Minds

Reports that movie legend Harvey Keitel was about to replace Mandy Patinkin on the CBS drama Criminal Minds seemed too wild to be true and they were.

The more TV-appropriate actor Joe Mantegna has signed to fill the Mandy-void on Minds after talks with the 67-year-old Mean Streets giant failed to turn him into the next James Caan (Cheapskates!).

Mandy Patinkin quits Criminal Minds

Finally, a Criminal Minds mystery worth following: Mandy Patinkin is off the show and no one knows why.

It's not over salary. It's not about the contract. It may be about "creative differences." It may be all in Mandy's mind.

Showrunner Ed Bernero writes on the Criminal Minds fan blog that the network and studio expected Mandy to show up to film the third season premiere-- since it was centered on his character, FBI profiler Jason Gideon. But he left them "in the proverbial lurch.

"Even to this moment, we have no word from him. He gave us no advance notice that anything was wrong, no opportunity to make the loss of the character work, no indication that we should be looking for someone else, no warning that we might have to rewrite the first seven scripts."

In the end, it comes down to press release today...
