Marvellous! Billy Crystal wants a talk show

billy%20crystal.jpg

Finally! A performer who wants a late night talk show who might actually be suitable for the job, Billy Crystal reportedly has his big, setimental sappy, Yankees-loving heart set on Conan O'Brien's job when (and if) Conan takes over for Jay Leno on The Tonight Show in 2009.

Billy, who's already proven his interviewing skills in the guises of Joe Franklin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Fernando, is a natural at the tender, youthful age of 59!

Poor Carson Daly has new reason to dream

Carson.jpg

Former afternoon kiddie host turned weird, thin middle-of-the-night TV presence Carson Daly has gotten a contract extension at NBC, and with it a new reason to hope that someday he'll get to take over for Conan O'Brien.

Carson's 1:35 am Last Call talk show recently marked its fifth year on NBC (has anyone seen it?), and has lately included lots of comedy sketches in hope that the suits will think Tara Reid's ex-fiance is cool and funny enough to take over the lead-in Late Night gig, if Jay Leno walks away as promised in 2009 and Conan slides into his job.

Fat chance. Though Carson has expressed a sad longing for the job, the suits rarely mentions him as a candidate-- and to twist the knife a bit more, signed Saturday Night Live himbo Jimmy Fallon to a holding deal that appears to make him the leading contender.

Even so, Carson said of his new two-year contract: "I can't help but think I am one lucky dude."

Jimmy Fallon gets closer to Conan

fallon.jpg

As we get word this morning that NBC's original late night host Tom Snyder has died at 71, the network is moving forward with its plans to have Conan O'Brien replace Jay Leno on The Tonight Show in 2009-- and with plans to replace Conan with former Saturday Night Live comic Jimmy Fallon.

NBC's late-night chief boss Rick Ludwin says he probably won't make an official announcement until next year, but confirms that Jimmy's on the top of their "short list" (he's 5'11"").

Sorry, Carson.

Andy Richter fails again

richter.jpgFile Andy Barker, PI under "cancelled," along with Quintuplets, Andy Richter Controls The Universe and the next two sitcoms that are handed to former late night sidekick Andy Richter.

Not even the support and involvement of NBC bigshot Conan O'Brien could help the genial tubby man's quirky comedy last six short weeks in NBC's Thursday comedy line-up. Despite a big push and 30 Rock's prime 9:30 perch, the show's been yanked off the schedule prematurely, with Scrubs getting the timeslot two weeks early.

The last two episodes of will be dumped onto Saturday night, where they'll be ignominiously burned off-- back-to-back-- from 8 to 9.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon?

jimmyfallon.jpg

He's a former star of Saturday Night Live who was a smug, self-satisfied anchor of the show's Weekend Update. He quit for a movie career that never quite lived up to expectations. He's known to think he's more funny than he is. And he's probably not too interested in what other people have to say.

So why not give him his own talk show?

We saw what happened when Fox poured millions into a late night talker starring Chevy Chase. And now history could repeat itself, as NBC is thinking about handing over Late Night with Conan O'Brien to Jimmy Fallon.

In what's got to be devastating news to Carson Daly, who's been begging for the gig, The New York Times reports the network is working to sign Fallon to a "holding deal." The deal would keep him in place for sitcoms or a role on Law & Order-- but all the whispers are about late night, and taking over, if and when Conan moves into Jay Leno's Tonight Show gig as promised in 2009.
