Late Night with Jimmy Fallon?

jimmyfallon.jpg

He's a former star of Saturday Night Live who was a smug, self-satisfied anchor of the show's Weekend Update. He quit for a movie career that never quite lived up to expectations. He's known to think he's more funny than he is. And he's probably not too interested in what other people have to say.

So why not give him his own talk show?

We saw what happened when Fox poured millions into a late night talker starring Chevy Chase. And now history could repeat itself, as NBC is thinking about handing over Late Night with Conan O'Brien to Jimmy Fallon.

In what's got to be devastating news to Carson Daly, who's been begging for the gig, The New York Times reports the network is working to sign Fallon to a "holding deal." The deal would keep him in place for sitcoms or a role on Law & Order-- but all the whispers are about late night, and taking over, if and when Conan moves into Jay Leno's Tonight Show gig as promised in 2009.

Fallon's good friends with SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels, who's also an EP of Late Night. Back in 1992, when David Letterman left the show for CBS, Michaels offered the slot to SNL vet Dana Carvey. Carvey turned down the gig and Michaels made the controversial move of giving it to Conan O'Brien. Conan was a writer, not a performer, and it showed. It took him years to turn into the cartoon character he is today.

Hey, it could be worse. Michaels could be offering the job to Chris Kattan or Rob Schneider. And Jimmy could be funny. Maybe he could even host the show as Barry Gibb.

terrible idea. Fallon wasn't funny on SNL, wasn't funny in any of the awful movies he was, and wont be a funny late night host. my most lasting memory of him during SNL was him cracking up and not being able to keep a straight face during any of his skits because he was laughing at the comedic antics of other castmembers with far superior talent (see especially the Boston skits with Rachel Dratch and various guest hosts, the classic cowbell skit with Ferrell and Christopher Walken)
