Law & Order: Special Attention Unit

meloni.jpg

Here's how a Law & Order SVU star keeps cool: with hot models spraying him down with Evian.

This exclusive pic shows Christopher Meloni in between whacks at the polo matches in posh Bridgehampton, Long Island this weekend. Which is not too different from the way he stayed cool while filming Oz and demonstrates that he did pretty well with that new contract that almost broke the L&O budget

Unique deal saves Law & Order -- for now

lawandorder.jpg

Dick Wolf and NBC Universal have sorted out the Law & Order mess for the time being. Despite his status as a mainstay for NBC and various versions of the L&O franchise being aired every hour on some network somewhere on the dial, the producer who can only get a hit if he puts the words Law & Order up front of the show title recently found himself with only L&O SVU pulling in enough ratings to be guaranteed a new season.

Now, after various bargaining, budget-cutting suggestions and the possibility that the granddaddy (AKA "the mothership"), Law & Order, would be moved to cable, they've got the solution:

Star Jones & Nancy Grace face off in SVU finale

star%20nancy.jpg

Star Jones, er... Star Jones Reynolds, whose hiring at Court TV ultimately led to yesterday's announcement that sour-faced crazy lady Nancy Grace would leave the network to concentrate on annoying viewers of CNN Headline News, will share the screen with her rival in the season finale of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

The episode with the lyrical title of Screwed (a bittersweet nod to the delusional Nancy?) also features the rapper Ludacris (under the moniker of "rapper/actor Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges") and Steven Weber (trolling for work now that Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip will be burned off after May Sweeps-- and not by any fault of his own since he was one of the best on the series) among others, and marks the debut of SVU Detective Chester Lake, played by Adam Beach, who months ago was touted as a potential Oscar® contender for his role as Ira Hayes in Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers, but now settles for a fulltime TV gig.

Mr. Beach, of course, is perhaps best known for his role in one of Tabloid Baby®'s Top 50 movies of all time®.

Too much Law & Order

law-and-order.jpgNot long ago, there were so many Law & Order episodes and shows, there was talk of spinning the brand into its own network. Today, with the franchise spread thin across the prime time schedule, TNT, Bravo, and USA, NBC is looking to cut costs-- and possibly, one of the shows.

Creator Dick Wolf, who can't produce a hit unless it's got the L&O attached, is expected to meet with the suits this week to talk about saving money on the "The Mothership" (that's what they call the original Law & Order) and the baby in the family, Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Both shows are having trouble in their new timeslots and bringing in an older audience than NBC prefers.

The obvious chops would be older, expensive actors. L&O is famous for shuffling the cast, and they could start with old Fred Thompson, the former US Senator who plays the L&O DA-- he said this weekend he's think of running for president (Yeah, he'll win). More drastic, but not out of the question, is killing off one of the shows altogether. And that would probably be CI, which was built around quirky Vincent D'Onofrio, who now splits the season with Chris Noth.

NBC saves SVU

melonihargitay.jpg

Ice-T and Richard Belzer are high-fiving this morning.

There was speculation in recent months that their Law & Order SVU franchise was in jeorpardy because notorious tightwad producer Dick Wolf wouldn't give big fat salary increases to the two lead actors who've become two big-- well, one big star and her TV partner.

Realizing too late that he made a mistake by allowing his actors to become bigger than their roles, the man who shuffles, kills off, mixes, matches and replaces players on his flagship Law & Order franchise, has bitten the bullet and anted up, signing series Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni to big, fat, rich two-year deals.
