Thompson has played District Attorney Arthur Branch for five seasons.
Sisto will play a brand-new character, and will probably replace Milena Govich as Jesse L. Martin's partner.
Thompson is a former US Senator and fills in for Paul Harvey on the radio. Funny he'd ask to be let out of his contract now, after hanging tough through all the Law & Order franchise cutbacks-- and cancellation rumours-- of recent months.
Sisto was a star of NBC's short-lived series Kidnapped last season. Funny he's coming on board as a detective. He had a high-profile role as a defense attorney in Law & Order's 17th-season finale last month.
Thompson plays a president-- Ulysses S. Grant-- in the HBO movie, Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.
In an NBC TV movie, Sisto played Jesus Christ.
(FUN FACT: Deborah Messing played Mary Magdelene in NBC's 1999 Jesus. It wasn't meant to be a comedy.)

Fred Thompson leaving Law & Order has nothing to do with any budgetary cutbacks in the show's payroll and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that the former Senator will be declaring his intentions as a Republican candidate in the 2008 Presidential race. I've read rumors that he's expected to announce over the July 4th weekend.
