The series will extend for 48 more episodes.
The episodes will be divided into three, shortened seasons of 16 episodes each.
The final episode will be its 119th.
The finale will air during the 2009-2010 season.
Lost producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse signed new deals with ABC Television Studio to stick with the series until the end. Variety reports that the pair wouldn't sign unless ABC agreed to an end date.
Lindelof and Cuse had wanted Lost to end after two more seasons. They basically get their wish. The 48 episodes over the next three years is the same number produced during the first two seasons of Lost.
The 16-episode arcs will allow each season to run without repeats and make each season more of an event.
The next step is for the Lost move to start a copycat trend. Cuse himself says he hopes more shows will set end dates.

what? three more years? that's ridiculous! this show has already given me ulcers. it keeps me awake at night...how will i survive...

This is good news. Now the producers can plan the rest of the series for sure. However, I think they should have kept with the spirit of the show and produced 108 episodes.

I think the producers did this because they realized they had potential to become cancelled if the numbers kept dropping, so they signed a deal in order to get a guaranteed (sp?) amount of episodes.
Let's just hope that they just don't waste the first two miniseasons on useless storylines and save all the revealing stuff towards the end of the show. I'd rather they spread it out amongst the remaining seasons.

But seriously... what a sad sad day :( Only 3 more years of Lost?? Sigh.... Well they better make every single episode count damnit! No more useless Kate flashbacks no one cares about!
In fact.. the only time I ever want to see another flashback of hers is if that episode is when she dies.

3 more seasons? That's ridiculous!!! The show has already gone on for one season too many and keeps on bringing up useless and irrelevant new characters and storylines. What next? Will they find yet another part of the plane and spend a season on those characters' flashbacks? You can't compare this show to something like ER or the crime shows as they have new storylines and endings every week. Lost needs to give us the answers before we forget all of the ongoing story lines. I've been a huge fan but feel like giving up in disgust if I have to wait another 3 years for answers.
