The Nine returns for six

ABC thought it had a sure thing when it premiered The Nine last October: a serial drama in which nine people form a bond through a 52-hour hostage standoff during a bank robbery. With a topnotch cast, flashbacks and mysteries and another ten minutes of the robbery advanced each week, they were certain audiences would be hooked--just like they are on the show's lead-in, Lost.

But critical raves and a prime post-Lost timeslot don't mean squat when you lose half the audience each week. So The Nine only made it to seven-- airings that is.

Until now. Nine had a 13-episode order. And ABC will fill the dog days of summer by airing the unseen six episodes next month.

The six-week run begins on Wednesday, August 1st at 10 pm.

Don't expect a grand finale. Word is the producers did not bring closure to the show or bank standoff, since they were expecting to be as successful as Lost and set an end date themselves sometime down the line.

(The Nine stars include Tim Daly, Chi McBride, Scott Wolf and Lourdes Benedicto.)
