TRL lives! It lives!

Yesterday it was pronounced dead. Today, MTV's Total Request Live lives, despite the huge swath of layoffs at the network and rumours for months that they were pulling the plug on the once-influential music video request show.

The former tastemaker for the 12-to-24 set has gone through its changes since its debut in 1998. But it's hung in there, though its once-impressive ratings have plummeted to new lows.

Vanessa Minnillo, Damien Fahey, Susie Castillo and La La Vasquez are among the show's hosts today. And, here's a line you'wouldn't expect to hear, especially not here, but it's true: They're no Carson Daly.

And in the age of TVgasm, MTV isn't the center of pop music culture anymore, either...

This week, the network pink-slipped about 250 employees, including everyone in the in the MTV World division-- which includes MTV Chi, MTV Desi and MTV K--and lots of TRL staffers.

But they've got their pride. And dirty-mouth Vanessa gets a career extension.

(...But maybe not for long. Our pals at The New York Post's Page Six say MTV wants Vanessa out, and that she won't renew her contract when it's up in April...)
