So I'm sure if you've been perusing these here internets for the past couple of days you've seen the clip of Kathy Griffin shouting down a heckler while she was hosting the CNN New Year's Bash with Anderson Cooper. If you missed it, she used a classic line from Mr. Show. "Hey I'm working! I don't come to your job and knock the dicks outta your mouth!" America is supposedly totally offended by this. So much so that everyone seems to have missed the fascinating mystery that developed over at Fox News Channel on the same night....
The producers of Fox's New Year's Eve bash thought it would be fun to ask their viewers to send in texts that they then scrolled at the bottom of the screen over the course of the night. Here's a sample:
A couple of mysteries arose. One, what happened with my text? "BILL PLEASE RETURN MY CALLS I LOVE YOU I MEAN IT I MISS YOUR HAIRY BACK XO FLIP" And two, who is the Magic Negro? Is it Bill Cosby? No. He's just really funny. And likes Jello. Carla from Top Chef? She has spirit guides and can taste food in her brain. Flip Wilson? SOMEONE TELL ME I can't sleep until I know.
Anyway, I think we learned a lesson from the News Networks this New Year's Eve. Derogatory black jokes are ok, as long as they're not derogatory black dick jokes. The more you know.

I read that the RNC released a White Album with racist songs on it. Like tadow mentioned above, one of the songs was Barack the Magic Negro. Sigh. I'm so glad it's 2009....I'm ready for something new.

Oh, wow! We went to a swanky dinner party for NYEve and forgot to tivo Anderson & Kathy, so I had not heard about the "dick" controversy, so thanks heaps for the link!
Learning that the vile and bitter republican party circulated racist material over Christmas just makes me sad.
As for "Magical Negro" -- wikipedia is your best friend, here.

Its title was drawn from a Los Angeles Times column that suggested President-elect Barack Obama appealed to those who feel guilty about the nation's history of mistreatment of African-Americans. Saltsman said the song, penned by his longtime friend Paul Shanklin, should be easily recognized as satire directed at the Los Angeles Times and nothing else.
Though the song is almost two years old, and the presidential campaign is over, 'Barack, the Magic Negro' is getting huge attention at the moment because if its controversial 're-release.'

While I think it's total political suicide to even go there, the song itself is parody of Al Sharpton being jealous of Barack's success (when he's a big fat loser perennial candidate, always a bridesmaid). It's not really all that worth yelling racism about.
