Hey Gasmii, our very own Nick the Intern went to a Battlestar Galactica/Syfy/UN panel this past Thursday on TV's Role in Making Global Issues Relevant--Problem is, we didn't really prep that it would be a do-gooder event and about global issues. hahahahahaha. Sorry Nick. Going to this kind of stuff is good for you. :-) There's more to life than Gossip Girl.

Until last night, I always thought waterboarding was a sport that involved being towed by a speed boat on a board, while doing tricks! Well this may surprise you- it's not! Last night I had the pleasure of attending a BSG event, Televisions Role In Making Global Issues Relevant. A panel including Eddy J. Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Ron Moore, David Eick and UN Officials. The idea really excited me. In fact, it made me rethink a career in politics--only if politics was all about robots, and spaceships and really awesome television!

The night quickly took a turn for the worse when E. JO went on rants about missing nuclear weapons from the old USSR, how the news in turkey is different from the news in the US, and asked the UN what they would do i they ever found Osama. I slowly started to realize THIS was politics. SNOOOOOZE! Someone mentioned Glen Beck and I smiled and nodded, but secretly was wondering who he played on BSG. Things started looking good when they showed us an action packed trailer for THE PLAN!--The BSG TV movie, from the eyes of the Cylons. Looked cool.

Finally the moment I was second most waiting for, the Q&A portion! Finally some questions to the creators like "What the frak was up with Starbuck" and "who would win in a fight, Sharon or Boomer" but instead, the first person up, who, I might add, brought his laptop to write down everything, my nerd alert sense were tingling... as I typed away on my iphone... asked the UN a question about something, my notes only say "eye roll". This wasn't looking good for me. The next person really brightened the mood when he proclaimed his Chinese girlfriend had an abortion and he never dealt with it until BSG... pass the popcorn, this is getting good!

The only interesting, none political panel insight was Mary saying she's the only actress in TV and Film to play a character who gets married after she dies.

As I said before, the Q&A was the thing I was second most looking forward to. The first being an opportunity for autographs and photos following the panel. So I brought my awesome BSG Emmy Box, made of red
plastic with a BSG disc suspended in the middle. I thought it would be cool for them all to sign. But when the panel ended, they were all ushered quickly out the door and up the stairs. A devastating blow to a disappointing evening. The night didn't leave me with bad feelings towards Battlestar, I just wish the evening was more ABOUT BSG, and less about global issues, but then again, the event WAS Televisions Role In Making Global Issues Relevant...who knew!
