The Hawaiian board of tourism was pissed at the SNL sketch poking fun of Hawaii this past weekend. James "Ducke" Aiona Jr., the Lt. Gov of the tourism board said, "While I always appreciate a good laugh, 'Saturday Night Live' went too far in its negative depiction of Hawai'i's native people and tourism industry...During these critical economic times, when tourism dollars are scarce, we cannot let such distortions go unchecked. The people of Hawai'i are among the most generous, diverse and culturally sensitive people in the world."
There's no doubt that the Hawaiians are probably the most hospitable people in the world, but you don't see the New Jersey board of tourism raising a stink about being made fun off all the time. Every state is suffering, and while most states don't rely on tourism, they can at least make fun of themselves. It's all fair game in my book...I think the Hawaiians aren't used to being in the negative spot light and they should learn that even bad press is good press. And let's look at the flip side, the sketch not only made fun of Hawaiians, but also the "cliche" tourists as well...You don't see me complaining that they didn't portray me correctly as a tourist.
And...to take this one step further, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson used to live in Hawaii, so isn't it all fair game then???
Relax Hawaiians, you live in paradise, and everyone is aware of how beautiful your land is and we love it. Mahalo.
