I'll be honest with you, I love Russell Brand, but I thought he tanked last night. It just wasn't his audience at ALL. I know a lot of people were in an uproar that a guy from the UK was criticizing our president, but he too has a right to an opinion. The one thing I thought was off-color was calling George W. a "retarded cowboy". Funny: Yes, PC: No. So, was Russell Brand Funny? I liked him, but maybe this was not his audience???
Here are my thoughts on last night. This does not include everyone, just the ones that stuck in my head:
Demi Moore: Was that really her??? I had to rewind it when I got home twice to make sure I heard the announcer correctly. She almost forgot her mic. Not positive.
Britney: So proud of her. They coached her correctly, and she listened. I felt like the excess in awards was a bit much..almost like she got the sympathy vote, but who cares, she's on her way back. Oh yeah...and her cold open with Jonah Hill: very cute and funny.
Taylor Swift: Who cares
Katy Perry: SUCKED. She ruined Like A Virgin. I mean RUINED IT.
Rihanna: She did an amazing job, I don't care what my friends are saying about her, she was great.
Michael Phelps: After seeing paparazzi photos of him wasted last week, I kind of liked him a little more, but his hosting skills need work. He couldn't have less enthusiasm to intro T-pain and Leona Lewis. It was embarrassing.
Lindsay Lohan: Why did she do a costume change to do one intro???
Miley: She did just fine. Perez stop calling her a slut because you want to be her.
Pete Wentz and Ashlee: he had to ask for the audience to give it up for Ashlee as he wasn't getting ANY response.
Shia: I thought it was cool that Linkin Park's first comment when they got an award was "I loved Transformers". It was so honest and human of them. As far as Shia goes, he was reading teleprompter and hiding his cast...not much else to say.
Christina Aguilera: Loved her new rendition of Genie in a Bottle. She looked great, she was lip synching, but she still looked great. If Gwen Stefani and Lady Gaga had a spawn it would have been Christina Aguilera last night.
Jodin Sparks: Way to call out Russell Brand!
Russell after Jordin: Making a horrible attempt to apologize to the Jonas Bros with an R. Kelly joke. I thought it was funny, but he was just digging a deeper ditch.
Paris Hilton: TURN YOUR LAZY EYE TO LOOK for the teleprompter. I laughed hard when she couldn't find the teleprompter and thought it was very funny and true to Paris character. Nice work.
Lauren Conrad: Is her voice getting raspier to you?
Pink: Well done.
Kid Rock: I'm still not a fan, but he did fine.
Christopher Mintz-Plasse with Slipknot: Slipknot funny, Chris: not so much. Sorry Chris, I love you, but your delivery was too forced.
Paramore: Great.
Kanye: After vowing to never do another VMA, he comes on stage with a blinking broken heart. It was fine. It's hard to mess up when you're Kanye and you have to not only please your fans, but also your own ego.
Another year came and went. It was drama-free and pretty uneventful. We'll see what happens next year...

Nads,
I've read your posts for over a year now and until now have agreed and laughed heartily at everything I have read. Taylor Swift is cared about in the Country music realm. While she is definitely not "Hollywood" material in that she is not a slut, alcoholic, drug/sex addicted maniacal teenager she is well respected as an up and coming young female country music superstar! Who gives a darn about Kanye. He said he would not appear again, but money talks and crap walked on the stage....
Keep up the otherwise GREAT WORK!!

I was not impressed with Jordin Sparks. She basically implied that anyone who has sex before marriage is a slut.
Sorry, no. I don't agree with just sleeping around, but there is nothing wrong with sleeping with somebody you are in a committed relationship with, even if you're not married. And hell, why would you buy a car without test driving it first, right?
Those purity rings piss me off. The abstinence-only education that people are pushing doesn't work - and teens with purity rings are likely to abstain a whole 18 months longer and they are less likely to use protection when they do end up having sex, thus continuing America's cycle of being one of the leaders in the world for teenage pregnancy.
I am with Brand on this one. Plus, I can't stand the Jonas Brothers. They make me want to tear my ears off.

Tuned in hoping for a VMA's like from days of yore. Britney did a servicable intro. Nothing spectacular. Rhiana was good - I would bet money that Wade Robson choreographed her dancers.
Then Russell Brand came out. Don't know who he is - but don't care. He wasn't remotely funny and I flipped the VMA's off.
Then again - I lasted about 1 minute longer this year over last year.
Will this show ever be relevant or entertaining again?

Nads I'm with you on every single point. With Jordin, I took her comments to mean that in the MTV gyrating and skin, it seems that everyone wants to be a slut or emulate one -- and young people who want to promote a different image shouldn't be made fun of for it. Agree or disagree, girlfriend had an opinion and it took guts for her to say it to that audience.
Russell Brand can kiss my voting-however-I-want and not-really-caring-what-England-wants ass.
Worst VMAs ever.
