"Married... with Children... with guns!"

What better way to kick off the first working day of the brand new year than with news of a brand new network prime time TV series pilot that's new and fresh and rips off not only a hit movie-- but a failed series from ten-- whoops, new calendar year-- eleven years and a couple of careers ago?

ABC is first out of the 2007 gate to announce it's filming a one-hour pilot for Mr. And Mrs. Smith, a dark comedy based on the hit movie about husband and wife assassins. First the bad news: the movie's stars, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be nowhere near the project.

The potential good news? The writer calls the series "Married... with Children with guns," which raises the possibility of a violent Ed O'Neil-Katy Sagal reunion. But we won't be getting our hopes up.

Writer Simon Kinberg, also wrote the movie, and the movie's director Doug Liman is also back for the pilot (Fun fact: Liman directed the pilot for The OC). Kinberg says the show picks up six months after the movie left off, with the Smiths living in a new house in the suburbs, back in the killing business, and with new marital issues. The series, he says, will focus on the marriage more than the hits.

ABC's looking to place the show in the fall lineup. If it does, this won't the first Mr. & Mrs. Smith on TV. CBS had a series of the same name, with a similar plot, in 1996. Scott Bakula and Maria Bello starred. It lasted nine episodes.
