Pep rally planned for High School Musical 2

The Disney Channel is going all-out next month for the premiere of High School Musical 2. The sequel to the modern-day Romeo & Juliet TV movie will premiere on a Friday night, have an interactive repeat on Saturday, and show up again on Sunday in a sing-along version. There will also be an Oscar-style pre-show featuring all the stars, music videos online and a special documentary by a two-time Academy Award winner.

All this and Zac Efron, too.

Disney's got good reason to hype the sequel-- including airing that grown-up doco by Barbara Kopple about a high schol production of the original.

The first High School Musical premiered in January 2006 and became one of the Disney Channel's most successful made-for-TV movies, with a soundtrack album that was the top seller of the year. It's still raking in the bucks, now that Zac is one of the biggest teen star around (at least until Hairspray hits theatres), with a DVD and even a stage show that's giving people a reason to visit the California Adventure park across the way from Disneyland.

High School Musical 2 premieres Friday, August 17th at 8 pm. Then settle in for the weekend.
