Executive producer Lorne Michaels probably got a real chuckle over the inclusion of his cast member from three decades past, but he probably wasn't recognized by most of the audience.
We'd have ended it with Fred Armisen, who got big laughs with his tears in the "Dry Eyes" sketch. And we'd bet that's what the writers had in mind before Aykroyd showed up.
(And how long until NBC pulls the clip from YouTube?)

Huh? Anyone who doesn't recognize a castmember from the glory days fails at SNL.

Wow TB... you seem to have missed the point... a few of them....
First..
Including Dan Ackroyd is always a good thing and even if the young children of today have no clue who he is the show can aim to a target and continuing audience..... we who have been watching 10- 20- 30- years!
Second.....
Why put the Sungina skit in the middle of the news>>> it was so out of place here and would have worked better ANYWHERE ELSE... such as the opening monologue, the ending, .... but not during the news.
And....
If I was in that audience I would not have sat there and laughed at myself on the monitor... I would have pushed my face right up in between their shoulders and cried like a thirteen year old girl.....
Seth Meyers Rules and is the life of the remaining cast .............
Seems TB your sarcasm not only missed the mark but insulted part of YOUR target audience

Well I guess the first debate point is ......if I agree with you....
as my mother would say...
Don't tell me what I think...
I think having Dan Akroyd in the skit was right.... period.

i agree w/ TB...dan akroyd really was out of place for this joke. It didn't help it at all, it just made it silly by the time the camera panned to him. I too was scratching my head TB!
