Last year at this time, the start-up of the syndicated The Greg Behrendt Show was the hottest ticket in town. It seemed as if every reality and talk show writer, segment producer, booker and coffee runner was faxing resumes and sneaking off to job interviews at the Sony lot in Culver City. Sony was throwing lots of money around and hiring lots of people for the new show
-- even though the folks doing the hiring admitted they weren't really sure what the show was going to be.
All they knew was that they had a comedian host with spiky colored hair, a soul patch and half the authorship of a best-selling book, He's Just Not That Into You, and one hour a day, five days a week to fill. In the end, it was a "a relationship show" in which the comic offered "practical, actionable advice delivered in his signature brotherly comedic style."
It didn't work out. Today, the resumes are being faxed out again-- from the Sony lot. Greg Behrendt is joining Megan Mullally and Geraldo Rivera on the failed freshmen list. Cancelled.
Maybe he should have called himself "Dr. Greg." The Greg Behrendt Show is not being renewed for a second season. It will finish out this one. Then most of its stations will pick up the new syndicated talk show starring the bald guy from The Jerry Springer Show.
Next year around this time, expect the process to repeat.
