New congressmen warned to avoid Colbert!

emanuel.jpg colbert.jpg piven.jpg

Rep. Rahm Emanuel, former Clinton adviser and an architect of the Democratic takeover of Congress, has given urgent advice to new Democratic congressmen. And it's not "Keep away from the pages."

It's "Stay away from The Colbert Report!"

"Don't do it. It's a risk and it's probably safer not to do it," he's quoted as warning.

That probably won't go over to well with Colbert, Jon Stewart and the other liberal comedians at Comedy Central's fake news division. But it's a fact that politicians of any party who submit to the Colbert charade wind up lookingt like idiots-- like Rep. John Yarmouth, who wound up debating the merits of throwing kittens into a wood chipper.

And Rahm Emanuel knows the perils and traps of show business. He's the brother of Hollywood superagent Ari Emanuel, author of an unintentionally comedic celebrity blog-- and model for Jeremy Piven's "Ari" character on HBO's Entourage.

Big brother Rahm is also chairman of the Democratic caucus and one of the architects of the Democratic takeover of the 110th Congress.

Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennesse is the one who squealed to the congressional newspaper The Hill about Emanuel's advice. But Cohen taped a Colbert show last week anyway. In an installment of the "Better Know a District" series, Colbert asked Cohen whether he was a black woman.

He had to say he's not.

Sounds like a joke for Fox News' Half Hour News Hour.

Wow, TabloidBaby, Perez Hilton's got nothing on you ... I don't know where else I can go to get this kind of ground-breaking reporting. I mean, I guess that I could just watch The Colbert Report; but then I would have found out that politicians are being warned away from his show like seven or eight months ago, when he actually did a whole segment about it!

dumbanddumber [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Actually, whether or not the story 'broke' elsewhere this morning, the warning from Emanuel was a story 2 months ago (even though reports of politicos avoiding the show are at least 6 months old), when the new Representatives first started their terms. In fact, Colbert did ANOTHER segment about it at the time, where he crashed a new lawmaker luncheon to try and shake hands with the newbies and chalk up their districts on his show. So I guess that puts you only about 2 months behind, instead of 6. Maybe you need better sources than Drudge and Perez...

Jeez, TB, you're very sensitive today ... sorry if I hit a nerve. And it's interesting that you try to make the discussion about me rather than attempting to argue my points...

shiaobundan [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Err. I have my doubts that this "won't go over well" with Stewart and Colbert.

Have you ever seen either of them throw a hissy fit unncessarily?

dumbanddumber [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I would say that the point is that you're reporting as a 'breaking' news story something that was actually reported on, and parodied, at least twice in the past 7 months by the subject of the story himself. I suppose the fact that you admit that you don't care says more about your own tabloid standards than anything else.

And I don't read, or have any interest in, whatever Sanjaya story you're reporting on. But I do watch Colbert (as you've probably guessed), and like the show; I guess that I was actually foolish enough to think that I'd find out something new or interesting from your story.

silentfire [TypeKey Profile Page]:

lighten up, it's just a news story. No need to go buckwild on TB

dumbanddumber [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Damn, I was hoping that you'd offer to send me your book, rather than me sending you my email address. And silly me, for thinking that the presence of a comments section might actually mean that you would want some -- you know -- comments regarding your stories...

dumbanddumber [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Hmmm ... just a suggestion, but you might want to ifnd something else to occupy your time while you're waiting for that email... :)
