The show lasted four seasons.
That's what they get for killing off Mischa Barton.
The news lightens the load of series creator and executive producer Josh Schwartz. As we reported this morning, NBC has picked up his pilot for his high-concept Chuck, which basically sounds like The OC with spies. He's also executive producing The Gossip Girl, which the CW is expected to order as a pilot.
The O.C. will be remembered for all the indie music it popularized and its six soundtracks. The show started out strong when it launched in August 2003, but scratched for ratings ever since it was moved to Thursdays at the start of its second season. Schwartz says in a statement that "this feels like the best time to bring the show to its close," which is true, considering that Fox had already cut back the show order and it jumped the proverbial shark when Mischa left.
(Our pals at Defamer report that Megan Mullally's syndicated talk show also got the axe today, which is no surprise. What's surprising is that the amateur hour is still on the air. Who wants to hear her speak in her real voice?)

Sorry, still love this show and this is crappy news! Sigh, no more Taylor Townsend.

Aww. I have sympathy for all the hardcore fans of The OC. I've watched on and off since season 1, but its always a shame when a good show (or one that has improved a lot) gets axed. Fox is great at doing that (Arrested Development, Family Guy).
Sucks for Mullally too. I really like her on Will & Grace, but she's like... uhh. a totally normal person on her talk show. Not fun.

As much as this saddens me, can anyone out there honestly be surprised by this?
It really is a shame that FOX decided to give up, despite the fact that this season's scripts were the best this series has ever seen.
However, at least we can get some sort of resolution before FOX just yanks it like they are known to do *cough cough REUNION cough cough*
Anyways, I know I will not be alone in shedding a tear on February 22.

This is very upsetting news, but not surprising. I don't really think The OC "jumped the shark" when Marrisa died. In fact, I think it brought new life (haha, pun intended I guess) to the show. And, hello! We got more of Taylor, which was so fun and props to Autumn Reeser, a fantastic actress. This season has been the best since the first half of season 1. So sad it's leaving.
And I am still seething over the cancellation of Arrested Development, one of the best sitcoms e-vah. Boo on the Fox network.

My day is officially ruined.
I think I'll go pout -- or gorge myself on brandy-filled chocolates...yeah, I'll do that last one.

Such a shame, the show has really been starting to get good thanks to Taylor. She even made Ryan seem less wooden in his acting.
But putting the OC up against Grey's Anatomy was a surefire way to kill its ratings for good. (Am I the only person who hates that show?)

i think killing off marissa cooper actually saved the show (well, the quality of it anyway). it's a shame that last year's snoozefest with marissa sent the show to the crapper before this year's FABULOUS season even started. i'm very sad about all of this.

I loved The O. C.
It was a really good serie,
I like it a lot but I don“t like the Marissa's death . It was really sad! But I like the couple Ryan-Tylor . Oh no! why do they cancel The O.C.? I'm going to miss that!
