Dwight, played by Rainn Wilson in NBC's hit sitcom The Office, is second banana to Steve Carell's Michael Scott on the show that was ripped off from Ricky Gervais' UK classic of the same name by Ben Silverman-- the producer and party animal who is now NBC's new chief of programming.
So Ben is expanding his horizons. While he made a name importing hits from the UK and shaping them into American classics, now he's copping from one of his copies. (Dwight is the American counterpart to Mackenzie Crook's brilliant Gareth Keenan; Carell, in a role originally offered to Paul Giamatti-- a star of Big Fat Liar, one of Tabloid Baby's Top 50 Movies of all time-- has Gervais' spot).
Hey, it worked for Frasier and Joey-- uh, it worked for Frasier.
