The Simple Life gets canceled

They've been busted. They've been mugshot. They've been sentenced to jail. They've had sex tapes. They've gotten skinny.

Now Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie have been... canceled.

E! has pulled the plug on The Simple Life.

How could they?

Us Weekly quotes an E! insider saying it was overexposure-- and not of the upskirt kind:

"We felt like the real life drama of their lives overshadowed anything happening on the show. Viewers would see Paris all day long on the news about her going to jail, so they didn't care about seeing her camping with kids. It just was too played out."

In true Hollywood fashion, the source gives points to Paris, while kicking little Nicole when she's down:

"Paris carried the show. She was the one willing to do anything. Nicole was the diva."

Hey, even Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance may have had trouble getting folks to believe them as Lucy and Ethel under the celebutard scrutiny of such m,edia outlets as.... E! Entertainment. And on Simple, Paris and Nicole were the Lucy and Ethel of our time.

(The series finale airs Sunday. But don't give up hope, Simple-tons: the show could get a reprieve if another network picks it up the series (Fox ran the first season before E! picked it up.)
