Now they're talking about a Family Guy movie

familyguy.jpg

Wouldn't you figure that the week The Simpsons Movie hits theatres that second-string Fox animation prince Seth MacFarlane would float the idea for his own Family Guy movie.

"We have been trying to figure out how to do that and the series at the same time without the series suffering,' he says, comparing his plight to The Simpsons' long road to cinemas, and admitting that his raunchy team hasn't come up with a script or plot-- or gotten the needed approval from Fox studio suits.

"Nothing's official," he says, but added that a flick based on The Simpsons' retarded cousin could be whipped up could be ready in a couple of years. And if it is, that he prefers something small for the big screen.

"I don't want to do 'The Griffins must save the world.'"

Meanwhile, the voice of Stewie says The Winner, the short-lived Rob Corddry sitcom he executive produced, might not be such a loser after all...

The Simpsons are officially from Vermont

simpsons-1.jpg

Springfield, Vermont, today was proclaimed the official hometown of The Simpsons. The town beat out 13 other Springfields for the honour, which includes hosting the premiere of The Simpsons Movie on July 21st.

The town was a late entry. 20th Century Fox ran an online poll on the USA Today website inviting people to vote for their favorite of 14 videos submitted by the competing Springfields, who tried to show how much they are like the fictional Springfield.

Vermont's Springfield has a bowling alley, a pub, a prison and a nuclear power plant just down the road.

A visit to the Kwik-E-Mart

quike1.jpg kwike2.jpg

The Tabloid Baby staff took a field trip to Culver City this evening to visit one of the dozen 7-11 convenience stores that have been transformed into Kwik-E-Marts to promote The Simpsons Movie. We'd thought the only time we'd wait on line at a 7-11 would be during a beer rationing, and in fact there were grumbles in the crowd when they realized the products that were Simpsonized didn't include Duff.

The Buzz Cola was sold out. So were the KrustyOs and Chutney Squishees and Simpson family member bobble head dolls-- there were lots of Mr. Burnses and Apus remaining, so pink donuts were the souvenirs of choice. And through it all, the Indian staff wearing Apu-style uniforms didn't appear to be insulted at all by the ethnic stereotyping or celebration of bad service, but seemed to be having a blast.

The Simpsons turn 20

simpsons.jpgsimpsonsorig.jpg

We missed the Simpsons' anniversary! Yesterday, April 19th, marked twenty years to the day that The Simpsons first appeared as short, primitive "bumpers" on The Tracey Ullman Show (remember when Tracey Ullman was Fox's next big thing?).

Fox did nothing special to mark the occasion. They're saving the party for the 400th episode in May.

And of course, there's the matter of The Simpsons Movie, which opens July 27th.
