ABC wishes us an Ugly New Year!

It's not quite as pretty as a Dick Clark-Ryan Seacrest cage fight (will the young twink ever wrestle away the mic from the stubborn old man?) on a rockin' New Year's Eve, but ABC is giving us another reason to stay in bed on December 31st-- and getting a head start on its 2007 promotions-- with an Ugly Betty marathon on its Family Channel. Eleven hours of the dramedy begin at 9 am and carry on through the day. Not a bad way for the network to get some more mileage out of the chickhit they ripped from a Colombian telenovela.

It's just too bad they're trying to fit the dog with a socially-conscious collar. ABC's using the "Family" side of its operations to launch a "be glad you're ugly" campaign that reminds us of those bizarre and cynical J Lo-narrated "self esteem" public service ads that Fox ran on The Swan-- during breaks between disfiguring surgeries on ordinary-looking women.

Be Ugly 07 is "a pro-social movement that asks America to be real, be smart, be passionate and be true to yourself, Be Ugly, like Ugly Betty in 2007." Which is why the "Ugly" actress in the lead is a chubby cutie behind the braces and specs, and why they've filled the supporting cast with uglies like Rebecca Romijn, Vanessa Williams and Salma Hayek...
