Isabella is still douchey, Anthony Bourdain and Justo from Bernandin rocked, Tre kept his damn shirt on (sad horns), Carla is beaker-riffic, Dale had one angry asian moment, Fabio can charm the birds outta the trees. Oh, and Marcel is an asshat…

Marcel’s dickery was kind of overblown this episode (he must be a REAL twat when the cameras are off for people to hate on him THAT bad).

Neat quickfire as they had to discombobulate 2 fish in 10 minutes. The best 4 then had to use the REMAINS (heads, bones, etc) to make a dish. I won’t spoil the QF winner, but two of the 4 were TurkeyHair and Sleazabella.

Instance #1 of Sleazabella being a dick: he asked Marcel where the soup strainer was (can’t remember the name for some damn reason). Marcel told him they were in back (where he got his). Sleaze comes back and tries to take Marcel’s, and then gets all pissy when Marcel says (rightfully) “no”.
I’ve seen idiots claim Marcel was being selfish here, but he wasn’t.
Keep in mind that there WERE more of these, and Marcel DID try to help (it wasn’t the only piece of that kind of equipment). Also keep in mind that if Sleaze had used Marcel’s, they would never get it clean enough in the time allotted for Marcel to use it for his dish.
    But somehow, Marcel gets blamed.

Anyway, after the win, the QF winner is captain of Team A, and picks Marcel as captain of Team B. For some idiotic reason, Marcel picks Sleaze, Oranjello, and a few others.
He may not be the most diplomatic guy in the world, but he WAS trying to lead the team, telling them to lay out the food ideas and theme BEFORE they start to plan who is doing what. Unfortunately, all he gets is pushback from Sleaze and one or two other on his team (Oranjello was, in his defense, trying to be diplomatic, while everyone else was being pretty dickish here)

So, leading up to the actual EC, Marcel was actually morally (and mostly behaviorally) right in pretty much everything he did. Sleaze and his other teammates were dicks here (sans Orange), but kept claiming Marcel was being a jerk (which I just didn’t see — everything he said was justified up to this point).

Avoiding spoilers at this point is nearly impossible, but basically, one team did REALLY well, one team did bad, Sleazabella continued to be a dick, Marcel started to act like a dick to people who didn’t deserve it (which was likely due to equal parts his innate dickishness and frustration at the fact that for the first half of the episode, he genuinely seemed to be trying), and Oranjello did his best not to get blamed for other people having issues.

There’s a bonus video where even Carla says that he sucks. Only in her Beaker way where she says that she hopes at some point that Kitchen Marcel (dick Marcel) and the Marcel they knew in the loft (nice Marcel) come closer together. I’m assuming so that most people don’t want to literally throw him under a moving bus.

Yep, vallegirl — I’m totally not denying his dickishness (we’ve seen enough of that), just that in this episode, most of his teammates pissyness was unwarranted. At least for the first 50% of the episode.

See, I thought it was in the first half where he was worse. He was intransigent about how to even discuss their plans. Anytime someone went off his script he had a fit about not writing things down or not scratching things off a list or whatever he was heated up about. All that was missing was the speaker’s pepper mill.

I’m not saying he was a good leader, but it seems like his team decided they weren’t going to listen to him no matter what. And they were being ridiculously hostile about it. Even Sleazabella said he (Marcel) was right in a TH, but was pushing back against everything he said, pretty much “just because”. Even a GOOD leader would have issues with a group like that.

If you look at the other team, they all were at least LISTENING to the leader (at least that’s how it appeared — and the results showed).

I know what you’re saying, I’m saying I disagree. I think they all wanted to work together but Marcel was only giving marginal consideration to what the others were saying. And he was acting like a child during planning. And Angelo had to explain to him that if four people agree on something that it would be best for the team to follow the majority rather than let one person dictate.

The other team was listening because they didn’t have a tiny tyrant trying to tell them what to do. And…that very easily could have been the case.

Although we’re in “agree to disagree” mode here, I think that Angelo was actually explaining that to EVERYONE, and not just Marcel. I think Marcel was right in that everyone was bitching about “Medi”, but not a single person seemed to be coming up with an alternative. (Which is what brought his whole discussion of “Medi is what we have right now. Until someone comes up with something else!” Seriously, how is that not justified).

The dude needs to learn some tact, but I feel the others were unnecessarily hostile toward everything he said (with Sleazabella being just as big of a dick as everyone was accusing Marcel of being).

Anthony Bourdain madrd a good point in his blog when he states the difference between a cook and a chef is that a chef can effectively lead other cooks. He also said that to lead effectively, you have to have earned the respect of your team. Marcel didn’t have the respect that he needed to be an effective leader. Now, one can argue all day about whose fault that is. Maybe it’s because Marcel doesn’t have good people skills or maybe it’s because some of the others thought they had better ideas, more experience, and Marcel wasn’t worthy of being their boss. Perhaps it is a combination of all of the above. Either way, there was discord and it affected the success of the entire team.

    Then there was the foam…

Ohhhh, yeah… don’t get me started on the foam.

I’m by no way saying Marcel was a good leader. I just think certain people on the team were so busy trying to go against him that they lost sight of the bigger picture. I think they were just as damaging to the team as Marcel was. (And things such as the sieve from the QF were TOTALLY not him doing anything wrong. If Marcel had tried to take a piece of common equipment from other people, everyone would have been all over him. For some reason, when it happens TO Marcel, and he says “no”, he’s the jerk who should be more “generous”.)

Orangello was trying the right approach (let Marcel think the ideas were his own). If other people on the team hadn’t been so determined to be jackasses, maybe they could have overcome the Marcel issue.

I disagree. It was obvious that Angelo was talking to Marcel with that 4 vs 1 statement. And I don’t buy the argument that Marcel wasn’t being a dick while trying to lead. He wanted everyone to do it his way 100% and not talk about anything else etc. But given the fact that a) he is delusional and lives in a fantasy world and b) if they lose someone else could go home for Marcel’s asshattery, they were trying to give their input. Too bad his ego was trying to squash it. Had he let it be an open dialogue where everyone had input, it might have gone differently

It was so interesting watching all the chefs try to look invisible when it came time for Marcel to choose his team members. Blaze even admitted that he was trying to hide so that Marcel wouldn’t choose him. After Angelo was chosen by Marcel, I thought he acted very professionally; trying to get Marcel to listen and compromise with his team, and then later stating that during the elimination the team should have given Marcel more respect. However, Marcel has consistently failed to show respect for his fellow chefs and failed to realise that leading does not mean talking the loudest or ignoring his team’s input. And….he used not one but two foams!

Would that Angelo tried to hide. Of course, being the tallest and by a significant margin it would be difficult, but he did have a resigned look on his face when his name was called.
