Paula Abdul’s wacky behaviour on and off American Idol has got people everywhere assuming she’s drunk or on drugs, has got producers scrutinizing her performance and editing out the loopier moments, and made it seem almost logical that she’d be replaced by Courtney Love.

But Paula claims she’s clean as a whistle. Clean as a whistle with prescriptions, that is.

“I’ve never been drunk. I have never done recreational drugs,” she tells US Weekly in an interview that will likely lead to more late night jokes. “Just look at my 20-year career. Tell me someone who is into partying or doing drugs that could have done that.”

But that specific, Clintonesque legalese word-parsing is followed by Paula’s admission that she’s got a prescription or two. And we can ask Elvis or Anna Nicole about fun with prescription drugs.

Oh, right. We can’t.
Paula, who’s 44, says she’s on the meds for “health problems,” including inflammatory arthritis.

“I have never missed a live show,” she insists (again, Clintonesque– the day she missed half the Birmingham auditions because of “family obligations” doesn’t count). “Even when I had surgery on my hand, I left my hospital bed to go to the show.”

“There have been 100 million lies about me. I’m squeaky clean. I’ve worked my ass off my entire life. (But) being involved in the show causes people to question everything.”

Now there’s only one word to question: Prescriptions!
