American Idol

simon.jpgSimon Cowell admits that American Idol has a serious problem this season– and it’s not Sanjaya.

”I think that we suffer from Jennifer Hudson- and Chris Daughtry-itis, which is people who didn’t win getting great careers and now a lot of the contestants believing it absolutely doesn’t matter,” he says. ”Sometimes there’s part of me thinking, You genuinely couldn’t care less what we’ve got to say; everything’s going to go your own way now.”

And some of the Top 8 contestants confirm the attitude.Chris Richardson, who’s been on the edge of elimination more than once, tells Entertainment Weekly in the same article: ‘You don’t have to win it. To me I’ve already won, being in the top 10 and going on tour (this summer).”

Says Sanjaya: ”I’m turning 18 in September. ‘So basically I see it as, this is my training to be an adult. And when I’m 18, I’ll have the training in what I want to do for the rest of my life.”

And, though it’s not related to this story, Melinda Doolittle, the grown-up professional who’s sung back-up for the likes of Aaron Neville, had a quote that was a little sad. She says she’s aware of what people are saying about her appearance (at least we only compared her to a Disney character): “I’ve been called Shrek, Platypus, you name it.”

Platypus?
