Paula Abdul says Simon Cowell saved her job after she was caught out “allegedly” having an affair with one of the American Idol contestants (“He’s like a big brother – or a lover. He was extremely distraught and protective and supportive of me when that happened.”), Randy Jackson disses Grease: You’re The One that I Want, not for the smarmy Billy Bush, but because it has three judges– one a female and the other a Brit (Randy, we must take exception: they did not have an African American on the panel). But when it comes to quotability and whipping up publicity on the eve of the show’s sixth season, no one tops Simon Cowell.

Riling the critics and ensuring nods of agreement from the lowbrow millions, Simon is quoted in the February issue of Playboy as answering the question of the century:

“Do I prefer Kelly Clarkson’s music to Bob Dylan’s?”
Sticking with his first season winner and creation, Simon sez:

“Yes. I’ve never bought a Dylan record. A singing poet? It just bores me to tears…

“I’ve got to tell you, if I had 10 Dylans in the final of American Idol, we would not be getting 30 million viewers a week. I don’t believe the Bob Dylans of this world would make American Idol a better show.”

So we’ll guess the kids won’t be gathering around the piano, weeping and trying to decypher the mumbles on American Idol‘s Bob Dylan Night.
