regis.jpgNow we know why Regis Philbin is being replaced as host in the next season of America’s Got Talent. He’s having heart bypass surgery.

The 75-year-old told his audience on Live with Regis & Kelly that he’s going in for the operation this week. “Well, listen, I gotta tell you something. I had been feeling chest pains, you know, and, uh, shortness of breath and all those little symptoms that you hear about.”

Reege described the angioplasty and made it sound pretty simple: “You know, you get in– bang, bang, bang- they blow it open and you leave the next day… there’s some plaque in some arteries and I’ve got to get it cleaned out.

“Darn it, I don’t want to do it. Nobody wants to do it, I guess. And I had a second opinion, I did all those things, and so they’re all in agreement that it should be the bypass. And so that’s what I’m gonna do.”He’ll be away from Live for at least five weeks. Should Regis survive the surgery, expect a nice appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, so the two buddies can compare bypass stories and scars.

It was announced last week that Regis will be replaced on next summer’s Talent by Jerry Springer, who we know does not have a heart.
