Anna Nicole’s gone– but Borat’s coming back!

Rupert Murdoch let the cat out of the bag and blurted that he’s signed Sacha Baron Cohen to star in a Borat sequel. The announcement is odd in at least a couple of ways. The plans haven’t been announced by his 20th Century Fox film division or by Baron Cohen.

But hey, Rupe’s the boss. And he said he’s seen Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan three times– “and laughed like hell.”Fox produced the first Borat flick, but let Universal grab Baron Cohen’s next movie, another masquerade which centers on an another of his three characters: Bruno, a gay Austrian fashionista.

Murdoch says Fox didn’t outbid the rival because Baron Cohen “would not even show us the script” (Murdoch and his Aussie pack aren’t so hot on gays, either). But that was before the hundreds of millions of dollars rolled in and before the Oscar® nomination.

The sequel idea had been written off by many insiders, on the assumption that everyone in the world is now in on the Borat joke. But Baron Cohen had problems fooling people the first time around, so you’d be surprised what folks’ll do when you throw enough money at them.

I don’t think you could have come up with a more tasteless title for this article if you tried.

word has already broken that Murdoch jumped the gun in making that announcement. Fox is in preliminary talks w/ Cohen for a sequel, but word around the campfire is still that it won’t be made.
