Hello, Breaking Bad boys and Breaking Bad girls! I’m almost overwhelmed with the week I’ve just had. Since last Sunday, I’ve gotten to watch the BrBa season 5 premier, plus a new episode of BrBa tonight, PLUS Dark Knight Rises. (Recommendation: go see it!) I’m OD’ing on favorite shit this week. It’s too much. If this were the week Assassin’s Creed III or Hitman 5 came out, I would be dead.
I almost called this recap “Boygasm”, but it turns out you get put on an FBI watch list for using that word
And yeah, I picked the shittiest character from TDKR for this. What of it?!?!?!
I feel this way EVEN IF last week’s season 5 premier wasn’t quite the knockout I expected, what with its Hogan’s Heroes-esque storyline and dearth of Jessie. I went into Season 5 Episode 2 thinking things would get back to normal. We would see more of Walt’s descent into villainry, and how it affects everyone around him. You know, what this show is all about.
But…Vince Gilligan and co. didn’t quite do that. And I’m not sure they ever will again. I’ll explain after the recap, but for now, let’s dive in.
Now let’s get to the recap!
PREVIOUSLY ON:
Here’s what the show wants us to remember for this week’s episode:
-Last season, Jesse suspected Walt had poisoned Brock with the ricin before turning his suspicions to Gus. As we know, it turns out Jesse’s first instinct was right. Ignorant to the truth, Jesse and Walt have patched things up, but will Jesse figure out the truth any time soon?
-Back when Hank was investigating Gus, but before the case was broken wide open, Hank was chasing up a lead on a German industrial corporation. This company, Madrigal, built some lab equipment that Gale had bought for the superlab. And since this week’s episode is titled “Madrigal”, presumably this week Hank is gonna be looking into them.
-We’ll also be getting a follow-up on last week’s discovery of the Gus’s Cayman Islands bank account number found in the evidence room in the police station. Wonder where that will lead…
-Last week’s confrontation between Walt and Saul, when Saul tried to back out of their business arrangement but Walt basically forced him to shut the hell up and stay in line.
-Skyler and Walt are settling back in together, at least on the surface. How will Skyler adapt to being married to a monster?
-And finally, the beef between Walt and Mike. Last week Mike was literally ready to shoot Walt in the face for killing Gus. Will that come to a head or will they patch things up, too?
COLD OPEN
MADRIGAL
I mean, I assume it’s Madrigal. The “previously on” section just mentioned Madrigal, and we know Madrigal is a German company. Right now everyone in this scene is speaking German. So.
If you like it, spread it!:

So glad you are back. Your recaps add so much to the show for me. I was thinking the women Mike met at the coffee shop was Gus’s wife. I liked how Hank will take help from his partner with. His. Walking and treating Gomez like a friend and partner without the macho BS.I always have to watch the episode again after your recaps to pick up all the detail you caught and I missed. I want to know what Brook says about what he ate to get sick. He isnto old to eat plants. Thanks for you great insights
Mike was watching “Caine Mutiny”, which is actually quite symbolic to the storyline as I believe the scene was was on they were just about to vote out the Captain (Gus) to replace him with another (Walt). Or it was another scene, but that does happen.
I think Walt is and will always be the main character, but they are not afraid to turn the focus on other characters for development. In the past they have focused on Jesse, Skyler, Hank, Marie and did an entire episode on Gus’ roots. This is what helps keeps the viewers so engaged in the show. You have true feelings about every character. When things like Hank and Mike have their first confrontation you are completed conflicted, as you are pulling for both guys. I personally really hope they do an episode on Mike’s days as a Philly cop.
Two things I LOVE about this episode: 1) Mike drinking an Ensure with a beer back – priceless! and 2) Merkert saying that “It was right in front of me the whole time” or words to that effect talking about Gus being the criminal overlord. Do you suppose that gets Hank wondering what’s been in front of HIM this whole time?
Oh, and wasn’t Lydia sitting with the Madrigal executives in the DEA office? I assumed that’s how she knew Mike – she is/was a Madrigal employee and Gus’s local go-between/finder of stuff.
And in the final scene, it sounded to me as though Walt said something about ‘family being the most important thing’. It sounded all creepy and Godfather-y to me. And Skyler looked absolutely terrified.
@timgunssister…yeah totally creepy! as was the boob grab.
Sky is terrified of him….he knows it, and doesn’t give a shit. If anything, he likes it! EEK
Awesome recap as usual. Two things: I think Walt’s flaw is not just that he thinks other people are stupid but that he’s gotten greedy. It’s not about paying for cancer treatment anymore; it’s about the big payoff. Nobody who wants a big payoff for the sake of a big payoff ever gets the big payoff. Also, I don’t know if you mentioned this after the first episode, but when Walt popped those pills in the cold open I wondered if his cancer had come back? We don’t normally see him popping pills, do we?
