The “L” in The L Word, which is supposed to mean all sorts of other things besides “lesbian” in Showtime’s girl-on-girl drama series, can now stand for “lotsa writers”, with the launch of an L Word contest that climaxes with the first “fan-scripted scene” in television series history.

Funny that the insertion of fan fiction in a TV series would begin on a show about lesbians, since the fanfic genre is highlighted by sex fantasies about Captain Kirk getting it on with Mr. Spock. In this case, fans are invited to reimagine a scene from L‘s season one or two that wil be rated by other fans and ultimately judged by a panel including the show’s creator and executive producer, Ilene Chaiken. The scene is expected to run in the show’s fifth season, which premieres early next year.

The big winner will receive $1,000, an onccreen credit as the FanLib/OurChart contest winner on screen at the end of episode, and a trip for two to The L Word to watch the filming of the scene. Other prizes for participants include a mentoring session with a member of The L Word writing staff, DVDs, a flannel shirt and picture of Portia de Rossi (okay, we made up the last two).

The contest is sponsored by the L Word website Our Chart website and the FanLib fan fiction site.
