Everybody (nobody) cried when scenery-chewing, showtune-singing divo Mandy Patinkin suddenly pulled out of the CBS drama Criminal Minds last month. And the big question everyone (no one) asked next was “who could replace him?”

Adam Arkin? Leonard Nimoy?

Well, the word this morning is that CBS is negotiating with the great actor Harvey Keitel. Which is even more astonishing than the great actor James Woods signing on to a by-the-numbers CBS drama Shark and sort of like the great actor Jack Nicholson stepping in for Jim Belushi on According to Jim (who’s really not a bad actor, either)– or the great actor Christopher Walken showing up on Dancing with The Stars (sort of).Keitel‘s greatest work includes flicks like Mean Streets, Bad Timing, Bad Lieutenant and Reservoir Dogs. And except for a coupel of Saturday Night Live hosting gigs and a guest spot on Ellen Burstyn’s sitcom in the 80s (he costarred in her Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore), you wouldn’t expect him to do TV.

But stay tuned. Nothing’s signed yet.

harvey%20mandy.jpgFUN FACTS: Mandy and Harvey starred together in the 1988 film Lulu On The Bridge (Anything to add, Sutter?).

Patinkin’s real name is “Mandel.”

As in “Howie.”

And by the way, the “showtunes” line about Mandy P. wasn’t a slap. His Broaway disc, Mandy Patinkin and Dress Casual) are on Tabloid Baby’s list of the Top 200 albums of all time.

Al Pacino said he would think about Dancing with the Stars “if only I weren’t so shy”. Shy?

Christopher Walken woukd not be allowed to compete because he’d be a ringer; he was a professional dancer in his youth. Have you seen his dance number in Pennies from Heaven?
