Golden-Globe-Nominations-20111

I loved watching the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards last night. Ricky Gevais as host was both snarky, mean-spirited and at times down right rude, but isn’t that why they hired him in the first place. The show itself was a tad predictable with a few surprises. But I don’t watch to see who won, I watch to see what the girls are wearing. I did get an early start with the red carpet shows, switching from one to the other. I must say, the ladies were quite stunning this year. Shall we take a look?

Is it St. Patrick’s Day?

angie1milakunis1

Angelina Jolie and Mila Kunis both look ready to kiss the blarney stone in their kelly green gowns. Of the two, I like Angie’s better only because it’s not so tight, but I’m not crazy about the Joan Crawford shoulder pads.

lizmoss1czeta2

Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss definitely looks like an impish little leprechaun in her tightly folded strapless gown but all of these ladies are green with envy because Catherine Zeta-Jones is the clear winner. Bravo and off to the Emerald City!

BEST DRESSED!

eva1emmastone1

Eva Longoria from Desperate Housewives wins my vote for “best dressed” of the evening. Everything from head to to toe, hair and make-up, was perfect. The same goes for Emma Stone. Both women had clean lines and did not ruin their looks by piling on the jewelry and other accessories.

carrie1sarahhyland1

Carrie Underwood and Sarah Hyland are also at the top of my list. Both ladies are not overdone and their gowns are perfect for them. I’m so happy the messy “can’t find a hairbrush” style is gone. I’m told we have Sarah Palin to thank for this new upsweep with bangs hair style. I don’t have much I want to thank Sarah for, but I will give her cudos for this one.

christina1sofiavergara1

In the sexy best dressed department, the winners are definitely Burlesque‘s Christina Aguilera in her black laced strapless mermaid gown & Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara in form fitting red satin trimmed in black. The back of Sophia’s dress was also amazing.

oliviawilde1jlo1

Honorable mentions on my best dressed list. Olivia Wilde looks like a princess in her full-skirted gown. It’s a happy dress and it makes me happy to look at it and her. I love Jennifer Lopez’s gown. It’s odd because I usually don’t. I really like the sheer cape over her shoulders. Way to go J-Lo!

The Clunkers: Worst Dressed!

helena1heidi2

“Whimsical”, that’s what The King’s Speech Helena Bonham Carter said about her outfit last night and I believe her. She’s a free spirit and really doesn’t give a good goddamn about what anyone has to say about her or what she wears. I do love the fact that she wore two different colored shoes. Now Heidi Klum, on the other hand, makes her living on high fashion, and to show up in a monstrosity the likes of that. Well all I can say is Mondo didn’t design it, that’s for sure.

julianne1tina1

I can’t even begin to understand what would make Julianne Moore think this dress was beautiful. The sleeve? The wrinkles? The color? The jeweled neck clasp? Yuk Yuk Yuk & Yuk! As for Tina Fey, she looks like she’s the understudy for the Addam’s Family Morticia. Is she ever going to get it right?

january1christinahendricks1

The Mad Men girls: January Jones saw her dress on a runway show in blue and asked to have it made in red. When I watched her being interviewed on both red carpet shows, she kept fidgeting with her midrift and those strings made her belly look pudgy. Very unflattering! Christina Hendricks dress, on the other hand, is quite beautiful EXCEPT for that HUGE flower in her face. WTF? Why? It totally clashes with her hair. Why ruin a great gown with a wad of leftover fabric.

kaley1kyra1

Why do I hate orange? It just doesn’t belong on the red carpet. It clashes! I was very happy that Katey Sagal won for her role on Sons of Anarchy, really I was. The cameras even zoomed in on Al Bundy smiling proudly as she accepted her award. But her dress looked like my first attempt at sewing a seam in home ec class, the material all bunched up, puckered and tight. As for Kyra Sedgewick, I will say it again, the only thing cute I’ve ever seen her wear is her husband and he’s getting a little worn out these days.

love1hallie1

The Angel vs the She-Devil. Neither one of them knows how to dress! Jennifer Love-Hewitt’s gown makes me want to throw ping bong balls into her top for valuable prizes Minute To Win It style! Halle Berry, who usually gets it right, looks more like she’s meeting up with Charlie Sheen in Vegas for the weekend.

lea1amyadams1

Two more beautiful girls with too much left-over fabric. Glee‘s Lea Michele didn’t win anything last night and I’m not giving her any cudos either. She usually looks princess cute but this dress is the wrong color. The fabric looks heavy and there’s just too much of it going nowhere. Amy Adams needs to take some scissors and just cut off that bunch on her hip and also that matching bunch on her bodice. Then she’d have a really nice looking gown. Both girls could Sarah Palin their hair a bit better.

Bring on the BEIGE!

sandra1scarlett2

Sandra Bullock is walking like an Egyptian or that’s what it seems like to me. The dark hair, bangs and makeup matched with her gown gives me a pyramid feel. Scarlett Johansson’s gown looks like it was made from fabric used to line funeral caskets. It really washes out her skin too.

diannaagron1kaleycuoco1

These two young ladies both look lovely. Dianna Agron & Kaley Cuoco chose strapless gowns, but I like Dianna’s better only because I’m partial to straight lines and not ruffles. Kaley would have looked better if her hair hadn’t been pulled into a ponytail.

amberriley1gaboureysidibe1

They say it ain’t over til the …. well you get the idea!  Glee‘s Amber Riley looks fantastic in her shiny metallic gown. Her hair and make-up are perfect. On the other hand, The Big C‘s Gabourey Sidibe looks like she just got out of the spa and put on one of those fancy silk robes they give you to wear afterwards. The one plus is that her hair and make-up are also perfect.

There ya have it. My take on the first of the 2011 big awards show fashion trends. The hair and make-up has all been toned down. The shiny metallic trend seems to have subsided. Ruffles have also disappeared. Dark green is in , for now anyways. What’s next?

I thought Cuoco’s dress looked really pretty when she walked because the layers fluttered nicely and it looked very delicate and dreamy. But I agree that Emma Stone was the best dressed. Weird color, severe silhouette and yet it came together nicely on her. Eva Longoria, though, looked like a madame at a NYC brothel. Just on the klassy side of tacky.

Awww Lea Michele’s dress was one of my favorites. I also loved Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Piper Perabo, and Eva Longoria.

The worst part of Lea Michele’s look were the faux tears she popped out, ever-so-delicately, every time the camera panned to her.

Claire Danes! I loved her total look, hair, jewelry, make-up and Oh MY that dress (although personally I’d never want to be that hungry). She stole the show for me. Also Anne Hathaway was stunning. If you didn’t see the back of Anne’s dress then look it up. Wow!

Soapboxx – agree re Anne’s dress. At first I couldn’t figure out why she chose it, then she turned around. WOW indeedio! Catherine Zeta-Jones was flawless, but she’s always been a class act. As for Helene B-C … I absolutely adore her! A hot mess – marvelous! Too bad you couldn’t really tell it was Heidi Klum under all that new haircolor, makeup and fabric — I thought at first it was just some PR flunkie that a cameraman took a shine to.

I also loved Anne Hathaway’s dress…I think it was my fav of the night. However, on Fashion Police, I learned that it wasn’t her actually skin we saw, but that flesh-colored mesh they use on ice skating outfits and that it looked horrible in person. Who cares, the camera loved her! I see her as Katherine Heigl a few years ago, only with more staying power as she has yet to be diagnosed with foot-in-mouth disease.

Lea Michele’s dress was def the wrong color. She needs darker hues like sapphire, to really bring out her coloring.
Scarlett J was boring as ever..so boring no one even stopped to think of how she must feel attending the same event as her soon-to-be-ex husband, Ryan Reynolds. How faded must your star be for people to forget you were ever married and only focus on your ex Ryan’s ‘maybe’ relationship with Sandra Bullock? Quick, Woody Allen, cast her in another stale dramedy, stat!

Natalie Portman was cute but that red flower on her dress was too distracting. As was Christina Hendricks’. Heidi Klum looked awful..hopefully she was in on the joke and did it to drum up press. No way, she thought that dress was a good idea amidst sparkling gowns and cinched waists.

Tina Fey never gets it right because she just doesn’t ‘own it.’ She always looks downright uncomfortable in a gown and gives off a frumpy appearance every time. She’s at her best in a dark, fitted crew neck tee, bootcut jeans, and Chuck Taylors, paired with a chic blazer if she’s feeling adventurous. But putting her in a gown just seems torturous for everyone involved.

MtnMama..I also adore Helena Bonham carter, she can do no worng in my book. She is committed to her style and look and it’s her trademark. She is the true example of what fashion should be, and that’s a clear statement of your personality and self-expression. The rest of the ladies, while beautiful, are mere products of the creative expression of others. Anyone can play dress up..but not many people can achieve a personal style that also becomes a signature look. Love you, Helena! Say hi to Tim for me, and do cast me as an extra in your next film! (If only to wear the costumes..)

Oh yeah, Leighton Meister was a nightmare, I felt like I’d eaten Thai and woke up in a Little House on a Prairie but she had the best shoes of the night. They were Jimmy Choo and to-die-for! Agree about HBC she’s refreshing.

I thought Emma Stone looked strange. The dress fit wonderfully but with the blonde hair and tan skin it all looked to monochromatic. I also loved Claire Danes, she didn’t get much love from the fashion people AND she won a Golden Globe.

Ha. It was the monochromatic effect that I liked with Emma Stone. It was a gentler tweak to fashion than HBC’s dotty old English woman approach, which I adore, too, because she owns her nuttiness like no one other than Bjork, but appropriate for a hot, young It Girl.

Can’t go too crazy with fashion but a severe dress in an odd color that still looks good on you? Works for me. I just wish she’d go back to a more natural hair color. She’s prettier with the red hair from “Easy A.”

But upon further reflection, I think Hailie Steinfeld was the best dressed that night. Such a gorgeous girl. Made the Bieber look like a tiny, little weasel.

I would like Helena’s crazy ass style a lot more if she didn’t look like she’s about to cry. Give me Bjork, who always looks delighted with her bizarre outfits!

I too love HBC, her style is all her own, come hell of high water…
The best dressed for me were definitely:
    1. Claire Danes – georgeous, the color and cut of the dress made her stand out, and she was positively GLOWING!!!(mayb she is preggers with her new hubby, Hugh Dancy, Yeyyy!!). And yet with all that she still looked like a REAL WOMAN, not some ‘princess’ come from a fairytale.
    2. Emma Stone – that cut and fit was to die for, and the color, instead of washing her out, made her look ethereal and breathtaking.
    3. Angeline Jolie – that emerald color is definitely perfect for her coloring, and the tailoring of the dress made her look like a MOVIE STAR, with clean top lines and tiny, tine waist and perfect flat belly. Nothing in this ensamble was out of place or not thought out, or overdone. Perfection.
    4. Catherine Zeta-Jones. I wish she’d change her hair styles a little, we’ve seen this one too many times before, but still she looked georgeous. It brought me back to her ‘The Mask of Zorro’ days, when she was fresh as a peach and oozine sexiness and femininity. Since she did not present nor was nominated I just thought her train could have used a little trimming (that much BANG! is generally recommended for walking the stage not just the red carpet), but I can easily let that slip my mind. She too was a vision, and the color was stunning!
