1934 – 2005

He’s the man who made lime green body suits with punctuation marks cool. Frank Gorshin is best known as The Riddler in the Batman series. He was also the first “celebrity sighting” I had in LA when I moved here. After an awkward “hey aren’t you…..” he shared stories of the Batman days and even paid for my lunch at Jerry’s Famous Deli. It was a real life TVgasm moment. It was the only time I spoke to the guy, but he was good people. Sadly, last night Frank Gorshin passed away and I just wanted to posthumously thank him for the years of entertainment and the roast beef on rye.

The roster of Hollywood greats who played Batman villains is just mind-boggling. I mean, I can think of Cesar Romero, Burgess Meredith, Eartha Kitt, Vincent Price, Van Johnson, John Astin (the other Riddler), Art Carney, Roddy McDowell, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Shelley Winters and Ottto freaking Preminger, of all people, just off the top of my head.

Rest easy, Frank. You had to love that clenched-teeth impression of Kirk Douglas he did so well…

Frank Gorshin was on CSI last night. Too bad he didn’t get a chance to see it because he was good.

I care about Gorshin’s passing. Was pleased to see his farewell performance in the CSI finale last night.

    Godspeed, Riddler!

Frank Gorshin’s Riddler was a reoccurring character that crept into my nightmares as a child and I happened to love my childhood nightmares. It is very sad to hear that he is gone. My sister caught last night’s CSI and was glad that she saw his final performance. Frank, my sister and I will miss you! May you continue to live on in celluloid and in the sleepy mares of many children to come.

It’s funny, it isn’t his stint as the Riddler I remember when I see Frank Gorshin, it’s his episode of Star Trek I’m always reminded of. It was wonderful and full of that in your face 1970′s symbolism for the racism in this country. He was a good man and a great actor. God Speed, Mr. Gorshin. We will miss you.
