This week of Grey’s Anatomy, annoyed the shit out of me. Last week’s episode, they focused solely on one case in hopes that we would have some type of emotional connection to him, despite knowing nothing about it. Once again Grey’s, A+ on character development. So this week…they take the easy way out, by still not developing a character to create an emotional tie, but they make it a child. Everyone cares about a cute kid! So that’s my rant, and this is how I feel about Grey’s right now.
WRITE BETTER STORYLINES!
And one other F-you to ABC, stop upgrading your video player. I have to re-install a new player like every 3 weeks. Now that I’ve revealed the super mood I’m in, let’s dive right in shall we? We kick off the episode at 4AM with all the Doctors getting pages and Meredith tells us there is no scarier feeling than that moment you get paged. Really? I thought the scariest moment was last week when McD had to choose the red or blue chord to save the guy nobody cared abouts life? Guess that’s old news.
Torres meets her patient who is a young girl who broke 50 bones and whose legs look like she’s halfway through the Violet Beauregarde transformation in Willy Wonka.
Violet, you’re turning violet!!
Arizona and Karev’s patient is a pregnant woman who had a car accident and the baby inside of her has a brain hemorrhage. Arizona and Torres both rush their patients to the OR which turns into a race down the hallway. Arizona ends up winning, as she should since she technically has 2 patients and one is a baby, and heads to the OR much to Callie’s annoyance.
Karev and Arizona take out the baby as McD takes over the adult patient. Aww, remember when Karev was really good with babies and you got the idea that the bad boy was going to OB, and then they just dropped that storyline. Arizona and Karev look over the teeny tiny baby and agree that having a stroke before you are born is a tough way to start your life.
Plus you are at Seattle Grace, so…strike 2.
Arizona rounds up the crew that will follow her through rotation today. She gives them a very Walt Disney World speech about how pediatrics is different then general surgery, and she runs it that way. Her patients believe in magic and fairy dust and she treats them like precious little humans, not a file folder. Her audience looks on with different expressions, Yang annoyed at having another day playing pretend with kids, Torres adoringly, Jackson smiles happily and Forehead blinds me with his glare.
After her speech, they enter the children’s ward where they are met by a mini Dr. Burke checking on the broken bone girl. He cutely welcomes Arizona to the room. Yang steps in to give the patient’s full update, awkwardly maneuvering around the small child. We learn that the bone girl broke 50 bones falling off the roof of her house. Arizona asks the other doctors what the diagnosis should be and even has a math question for Dr. Mini Burke, which he gets right.
Smart and Cute, if you can perform surgery on hearts and spew hateful slurs then watch out for Yang.
They follow Mini Burke to the next room which turns out to be his own. He gives the full update on his diagnosis and tells us that he’s 10 years old and has been in and out of the hospital for months and had had multiple surgeries.. Tiny Burke is super cute as he tells the other doctors how Arizona helps him with his homework and lets him go on rounds with her. Once again confirming why she is the only redeemable doctor in this hospital, as Yang looks on annoyed, once again confirming why she is a total bitch.
The conversation is interrupted by Tiny Burke’s parents. The father tells Arizona that he has requested a meeting with the Chief and someone from the board and they would like her in attendance. The music goes serious as Arizona nervously agrees. When Arizona enters the conference room, the board member (asshole) tells Arizona they she better not have done anything to piss these people off, as Seattle Grace is far enough in the shitter.
The parents come in and sit down and tell the three doctors that they never expected their son to reach his ninth birthday. And thanks to Arizona, he’s now reaching his 11th birthday. They continue by saying that they would like to give Seattle Grace a gift of $25 million dollars. The three doctors look on in complete awe and Arizona can’t even articulate a response.
The wife looks directly at Arizona smiling and says, Happy Birthday Arizona. The Chief looks on shocked, because the sweet Doctor they just threatened, just brought in a paycheck so hefty it makes the Denny Duckett free clinic look like, well a free clinic
I have 25 million reasons why I’m going to enjoy seeing that foot in your mouth Baldy.
At Yang and Torres’ pad, there is a crew assembled for breakfast. Could this be the Fraternity House 2.0? Torres prepares breakfast for Yang, the Major, Lexie, Sloan, Arizona and herself as they discuss how amazing the $25 million donation is. During the discussion Torres learns that Arizona’s birthday is approaching which was a surprise to her. Speaking of surprises, after Arizona leaves Lexie suggests that they throw Arizona a surprise party. Sloan disagrees because nobody loves being surprised but Torres looks intrigued.
Back at the hospital, the Chief pulls Karev aside as he ignores McD who cheerfully says hello despite being fired. The Chief looks uncomfortable as he presents Karev with a massive file. Apparently medical bills don’t just disappear because the patient does, and the file is Izzie’s unpaid medical expenses. I wonder what looks dumber to Karev now, Izzie donating $8 million to a walk-in clinic story line that got dropped last season, or ignoring Izzie’s DNR? Karev looks appalled and terrified as the Chief walks away. And who should overhear this entire story line.
How awkward that I’m always here learning more about your life.
In the baby room, the premature baby Karev is treating is not doing so hot. He updates Arizona who looks discouraged. After she leaves Pixie flits up with Karev’s chart that she grabbed for him out of the goodness of her heart. What? Why so nice to him? I thought you guys hated each other? I feel so confused….She asks Karev if he is doing ok, and he reminds her he’s trying to safe a child’s life so go find another lost boy to annoy. She walks off, but I’m willing to bet $10 she tries to have this conversation again before the episode is out.
Arizona checks on tiny Burke and he’s had a rough night and isn’t doing so well. Forehead comes in while tiny Burke’s mom helps him fall asleep. Arizona pulls him aside and asks to re-run some tests. She just wants to cover her bases. Like an actual doctor who gives a shit.
The mom of Karev’s patient is being treated by McD. Karev stops by to check on her and both patients appear to be touch and go. The mom wakes up and wants to see her baby. They tell her that she isn’t stable enough and she continues to beg. She then begins to seize.
Is it just me, or does this happen to at least one patient every week?
While she is seizing, Karev gets a 911 page about the baby and takes off. Karev joins Arizona who tells him the problem with the baby. While they are treating her, Forehead comes up with bad news about Tiny Burke. He shows Arizona the ex-rays and she knows what’s wrong and leaves to go treat him. When it rains, it pours. Obviously, I mean it is Seattle.
Back with the broken bone girl, Yang and Jackson are looking over her injuries. While they check her, Torres and the Major arrive with some disturbing news about Bones’ state of consciousness when she “fell” off the roof. Turns out she was shrooming and decided to see if she could fly. The parents are furious and tell her how disappointed they are with her. She basically laughs in their face and reminds them of her perfect grades, her perfect extra-curricular activities, her perfect volunteer schedule and is like, get over it….I shroomed, we’ll all live. (well unless you had broken your neck when jumping smart ass). All the doctors look on amused as she finished her diatribe.
Karev is treating the premie when Pixie comes in offering to help. Karev says it’s not necessary because the child is going to die. Pixie is appalled that he is just going to stand there and watch so Karev tells her to just get out of there if dying children bother her so much. Oh and maybe avoid watching this episode. After she leaves the grinch’s cold heart melts as Karev picks her up and holds her.
If you tell anyone about this I’m going to make you get treated by Yang.
Arizona and the Chief find tiny Burke’s parents with terrible news. The moment they have been fighting for two years is here. There is a surgery that she could try on him, but she strongly recommends against it because he is not strong enough for it. The dad is furious and demands she buy his son more time so they can continue looking for a cure. Arizona regretfully apologizes and walks away, the Chief quickly at her heels.
The Chief reminds Arizona that these aren’t people who hear no, there is nothing they can’t buy. And if she doesn’t give their child the surgery, they’ll find another doctor who can. Arizona again strongly advises against the surgery, but the Chief eventually wears her down and she agrees to try. Where was this confidence and encouragement last week with McD?
Back with Karev and the premie, he is still holding her when Bailey walks in. Bailey notices that the baby’s vitals are doing better after being held by Karev. She gets an idea and tells Karev to take his shirt off because skin to skin contact is even better for the baby. This sounds like a line that got me in a lot of trouble a few years ago at an ATO party. She continues to insist even after Karev tells her to take her shirt off. But Bailey, being Bailey wins and then…so do we.
But the topless trick works….again, and the baby’s heartbeat continues to improve. The moment is quickly interrupted when McD and Sloan find him topless in there and give him shit for it. Shut your yaps and take your shirts off too boys! That would make this episode remarkably better! Pixie then stumbles in there and is equally embarrassed and aroused by the site.
In the bone girl’s surgery, Torres, Hunt, Yang and Jackson remiss over the girl’s ability to talk back to her parents and get away with it. While they are finishing up nailing and screwing her back together, shockingly…something goes wrong with her. Whatever is wrong with her requires calling in cardio to fix it. Yang requests to take care of the issue because she can fix it in 30 seconds, whereas cardio might take 30 minutes. The Major vehemently denies her request and she continues to insist as it’s a procedure she has done plenty of times.
The situation continues to worsen and Yang finally unable to stand there and watch, blows off the Major and takes matters into her own hands. The Major begins to yell at her as Torres is like, WTF Yang, but hottie Jackson steps in to help her. Yang begins the procedure quickly as the Major continues to yell at her. She’s in and out of there within about 30 seconds, successfully fixing the problem.
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
Jackson agrees with that, but the Major….does not. After the surgery, the Major is furious with Yang. The two of them fight in the post-scrub room and the Major tells her that she has to be reported to the Chief. Yang is like, fine go ahead…the last time I did that was with the Chief in the OR and he was encouraging. Not all yelling and freckly! The Major storms out of the room as Jackson walks in. Jackson tells her that she rocked and he is obviously impressed, and am I sensing a little smitten? Yang rolls her eyes and leaves. Ok, now the MWN are being pretty nice, Seattle Grace bittertons. Maybe start to be nice back!
Torres heads outside to tell Arizona about Yang going rouge in the OR but before she has a chance she sees that Arizona is visibly upset. Arizona asks Torres to tell her that she is great because she is scared shitless of the surgery she’s about to conduct. Torres happily obliges and now Arizona is ready for tiny Burke’s surgery.
Arizona finds tiny Burke and he is really scared. He recognizes that he has been there longer than any other patient on the floor and he is really scared of dying because he has nightmares when he sleeps. So basically the whole “You Are Great” speech that Arizona just got is straight out the window, and she is scared shitless again.
Would you want to be responsible for killing this face?
In the surgery, Arizona is freaking out. The Chief watches over her shoulder as she repeats that the surgery is not a good idea. We next see her in Torres’ apartment as Callie comes home. Arizona is visibly upset and Torres thinks that tiny Burke didn’t make it. Arizona informs us that no, he did actually make it, but for the first time in their relationship Arizona needed Torres’ support, instead of the other way around, which was usually how things went. As they are arguing, the Major and Yang burst in also arguing.
Arizona is momentarily distracted when she overhears their argument and wants to know why Torres didn’t tell her that Yang went rogue on a child. Torres cannot win in this situation, but in all honesty…if you want to date a woman, you are going to have to deal with irrational anger and picked fights. Just saying. The Major storms out of the apartment and says that he is done because one day Yang’s luck will run out. I dunno man, I think her luck ran out when she started dating a ginger who strangled her in the night. Arizona gets paged and also storms out and Yang and Torres stand there alone.
The page Arizona received was for Tiny Burke. His body wasn’t stable enough for the surgery, which is what Arizona said from the beginning and now he is shock. The Chief comes in to help, and Arizona tells him to get the hell out of her OR because all he cares about is the $25 million.
The Chief and the board Asshole wait outside for the result. Arizona comes out with the news that tiny Burke didn’t make it. She also says that she won’t be the one telling the parents because she would encourage them to sue her for killing their son. The Board Asshole agrees that it might be better if she stayed away.
This is when I started to get pissed. I know the writers realize that viewers aren’t feeling emotionally connected to this show anymore, but don’t kill a child to get that! Remember last season with the 3 episode story arc with the inmate? That built something. That built feelings and emotions. The only reason this drew emotions out was because it was a kid and because of Arizona. Otherwise, I feel like it was an easy way to tug at the heart strings that you haven’t touched all season.
Moving on, Yang is at Grey’s bitching about the Major’s bitching and Grey is all smiles. Grey thinks that the Major getting so furious is just because he cares about Yang. I’m pretty much over this romance, so I really don’t care either way. Grey is excited though because she thinks Owen is in love. Barf.
I’d rather see her make out with this coffee cup than with Owen.
Speaking of love, at the hospital Jackson is telling Pixie about how bad ass Yang was in the OR. Pixie, playing the part of the pot is like…you have no chance with Yang! Jackson, playing the part of the kettle is like, I don’t? Look at you No Shot, as they walk by Karev shirtless and asleep with the premature baby.
The only way this would be hotter is if he was holding a puppy.
Bailey wakes Karev up and tries to get him to go home, but he insists on staying. Bailey tells him he’d be a good pediatric doctor and seems mildly interested. What’s that…possibly storyline continuity? OMG!
Yang is finalizing things with the Bones girl who is on the phone with a friend of hers asking for drugs. Well that’s smart moron. Ask for drugs in the presence of your doctor. Why don’t you share needles in front of her next? Yang pulls the phone away from her and goes off. She lets the girl know she almost died during surgery, because her body was so strung out from the various shit she’s put in her body and oh yeah….you jumped off a roof while high. You’re not that smart!
Poor Arizona then has to watch the reaction to Tiny Burke’s parents as they learn that he didn’t survive surgery. They are both devastated as is Arizona. She sadly walks to Torres’ door and when she does, there is a surprise waiting for her. Everyone screams SURPRISE happily and Arizona, unable to speak begins to sob. Everyone has that awkward, oh shit…what now face, except Sloan who is like, uh I told you so assholes. Arizona runs out sobbing with Torres right behind her.
Who has terrible timing and won’t be getting laid tonight, THIS GIRL!!
Arizona is devastated as she tells Torres about Tiny Burke. The birthday celebration was supposed to be for him and now he’s gone. Torres tells her to go home, and everyone being a surgeon will understand. I really do love Arizona.
Arizona goes back to the hospital to confront tiny Burke’s parents. They are in the process of packing up his room and having their asses thoroughly kissed by the Board asshole. When he sees Arizona he tries to make her leave, afraid of what she’ll say, but the Chief insists she stays. Arizona who is clearly upset asks the parents if they want to see the child.
Pixie finds Karev still with the baby. She tells him it’s ok to leave, and he just kind of snaps. He can’t go home, he can’t find his wife and he certainly can’t afford to pay the $200k medical bills she stiffed him for. He’s totally powerless to everything, except holding the baby. Pixie, obviously endeared, stays with him.
At the party, everyone is feeling pretty low. Lexie feels like crap, because it was her idea. But Jackson is taking advantage of the free booze, a man of my own heart. He confronts Yang to tell her how hot she was in the OR that day, and while she is obviously flattered she is like, dude you’re in my room, get out. He corners her to tell her how bad ass she was, and the chemistry between them is palpable. Or maybe just the chemistry from Jackson is so sexy I’m feeling it. Either way, it’s hot. He goes in for the kiss and she kisses back until she quickly remembers ole Frecklemeister and pushes him away. When Yang walks away, you can tell that Jackson is not discouraged by her reaction.
Bet he won’t strangle you either.
And speaking of moments between newbies and oldies, Karev and Pixie give the daughter back to her mom and it’s a very sweet moment.
Yang goes to the hospital to confront the Major. She tries to explain that in surgery, she wasn’t trying to be bad ass, she was being her and begs him to see that. He doesn’t, and she quickly retreats and asks him to come home with her. Why the F would you beg the Major to come home with you when Jackson wants to make out with you in your bedroom. Seriously? To me there is absolutely zero competition there.
Let’s weigh this out.
Jackson=hot, sexy, supports you in surgery, obvious chemistry and passion
Owen=red, troubled, massive baggage, strangles you in the night
Tough call…
Arizona brings the parents to say goodbye to Tiny Burke. It’s incredibly sad and the three of them all mourn together. As the mom sobs, the dad tells the Chief and Board asshole that because of Arizona that they will still make the $25 million donation. Sadly for Arizona, she’ll never enjoy this victory.
She heads home to Torres who is waiting for her in lingerie. She pops out of bed with donuts and hats and is ready to celebrate. While she seems a little desperate and manic to me, but it works for Arizona who tells her she love her. And Torres is shocked, but loves her too. Aww.
Whose ready to party??
So there you have it. I don’t know, this episode just left me annoyed because I really felt like they took the easy way out to get emotion. They did endear Arizona to me more though. Looks like Izzie is coming back next week, shockingly in time for sweeps, but a little early for the Karev/Pixie romance to have progressed the way I thought it would. I am kind of beginning to dig the newbies, even Forehead was bearable this episode. Anyways, from the previews it looks like Izzie is back and acting like a complete beotch, and I really hope they haven’t knocked her up. But we’ll see. Till then!
If you like it, spread it!:

Lololol! This was a good recap. I love the amount of subtle humor you use. I acutually laughed out loud!
Wow, thanks chozengirl! That’s like the nicest thing you could say to someone like me. Especially with this show, it’s a little tougher to bring the snark. The only thing nicer would be you telling me I look skinny, but your compliment I actually believe!
Great recap. I personally don’t mind that they’ve gone a little heavier on the medical drama and eased back on the soap opera for a couple episodes, but you make a valid point. A couple seasons ago they would have had the kid and family be recurring characters for a few episodes so the audience could develop a connection with them. I guess it’s cheaper to get the guest stars in and out in one episode. I think it’s funny how they figured out an excuse to have Meredith lying down all the time to hide her pregnancy . . kind of like the “These Dreams” video from Heart, when Ann Wilson porked up and they kept shooting her at all these funny angles to make everyone think she didn’t weigh 200 pounds.
P.S. why would any of the male characters on this show find Yang attractive? She’s not particularly good looking. Maybe it’s her winning personality.
I totally agree… this kid has been there for 3 years, and “helping” with rounds yet we’ve never seen him before?
Blech to Izzy being back. Seems like she just left. The show has been so much better without her.
Great recap, not too snarky or even “funny” but you do have a good feel for the show, and it’s an entertaining read (and I totally agree with you on everything lol)
